Watching '300' and my girlfriend just said "thats a terrible picture" (as in PQ)... I tried to explain about the grain and why its added but she said it counteracts the whole reason of high definition!! HELP!!

Show her Cars, POTC, or The Patriot. If you have a seperate DVD player available and the corresponding DVD and Blu-ray, then switch between the two so she can see the difference. Then, ***** slap her.

Actually, a great movie to show is Casino Royale on BD.

It starts in grainy black and white and then it kicks into grainless color at the opening credits... great impact.

Did you calibrate your TV? To much sharpness can overemphasize grain...

This agian......

Tell her too bi!ch to the director

Grain will be always be there. The HD can make grain more noticeable in some cases, but there are many factors that have to be taken into account. Screen size, viewing distance, is the grain intensional, what/how was it filmed ect....

Like most people in the general public she just doesn't understand what HD is. The definition (no pun intended) of HD is not "Absent of film grain."

To me it would be no different than watching a black and white movie and having someone say that black and white "conteracts" the purpose of HD.

Nonsense.

Pop in an SD copy of 300, and show her 'the creators intentional effect/grain' looks better than the effect/grain looks in SD

I loved the presentation of 300. Despite the grain, I thought that the BD had excellent PQ.

Look at her calmly, then look around as the air around you feels still, you can sense the weight of the entire highdef blu-ray community resting on your shoulders, and you accept your destiny.

Look at her one more time with all the earnestness you can muster and speak with all the gravitas the occasion requires :
"This is Director's Intent!"

Compare to DVD. Is she blind? PQ is not about grain.. grain in 300 is just a small mask over the great PQ.. it doesn't really change it.
