Default PS3 vs. Samsung bdp-1400, or any others

Worlds of difference. Cnet has a great review on how bad the bdp-1400. I am big time blu, want the full audio and video, being that it doesnot have the capability of pic in pic capabiliteis or bd live is it worth for me to keep? i only spent $259 at Costco.I dont know if i shoud keep it. the only benefit over ps3, is that i can bitstream dtshdma and dolby true hd to my onkyo 805, the ps3 only does uncomp pcm and 5.1 dts or dd, so if i have a 7.1 dts hd ma movie, the ps3 only does pcm at 5.1. otherwise ps3 has wifi, software update for pic in pic, like hd dvd, maybe bd live in future. Ps3 loads in 30 sec or less, I placed spiderm 3 in samsung and it took like 2 min to load. Snails ville.I just though i would throw my 2 cents in, the pany bd 30 is almost as good as ps3 but $$$ more than samsung, and the pany bd 50 coming maybe $ more than bd 30. SO thats it.. what say yall?

WHY DO YOU GUYS STICK UP FOR SUCH AN INFERIOR MACHINE,bdp 1400, YES I DO HAVE ONE BUT I MAY RETURN it, DOESNT COMPARE TO MY PS3. DO YOU NOT CARE ABOUT PROFILE 1.2 OR BD LIVE, CAUSE THIS MACHINE DOES NOT, NOR WILL IT DO IT! ps3 has profile 1.2 now but BD LIVE i am not sure about.

It is actually profile 1.1, there is no 1.2 profile the next step is BD Live/Profile 2.0 and the PS3 is BD Live capable, but not yet available, expect a firmware update in the future. The only differences between 1.1 and 2.0 are 1GB of memory (The smallest PS3 had 20GB), and internet connection capability (ethernet or wireless). Most of the big changes came in the transition from 1.0 to 1.1, this added secondary video and audio decoders, a min 256MB of storage and a virtual file system (which I believe is that folder which now appears under the XMB's video icon).

If the PS3 had the bitstreaming HD audio down, it would be the best player on the market hands down IMO. But since it doesnt the 1400 stands up pretty good at a price point of about 300 with the features it supports....I can deal with slightly longer load times, it still has played ever disc I have thrown at it.

The good: Excellent image quality on Blu-ray movies; outstanding soundtrack support with onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution and bitstream output for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio; relatively low price compared to other standalone Blu-ray players; Ethernet port for updating firmware.

The bad: Only Blu-ray Profile 1.0 compliant, so it will not play some bonus features on some new discs in 2008; below-average performance with 1080p output at 24 frames per second; some annoying operational issues.

The bottom line: The Samsung BD-P1400 delivers a mostly capable Blu-ray player at a relatively affordable price, but it's probably still better to hold off for newer models or a PlayStation3.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesnt the 1400 only have internal decoding of Dolby TrueHD? and cannot Bitstream it? (perhaps its bitstreaming the core?)

The firmware update unlocked Dts-HD Master Bitstream capability, but not TrueHD. (already has onboard decoding)

So really it only has Dts-HD Master above the PS3...which should be getting in near future anyway...

i can confirm that too, it bitstreams both dolby trueHD and DTS HD MA. Both of those titles come up and look pretty damn sexy on my denon 3808 screen

ps3 is your best bet at a future proof player, but at a price point of under 300$, the 1400 stands its ground with a lot of great features. ill keep my 1400 until a dedicated 2.0 player comes out that proves to be worth the extra coin im sure to be dishing out for it.

Just to clarify... what exactly does "future proof" mean?

From CNET....
The BD-P1400's high-resolution soundtrack support is excellent. It has onboard decoding for Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD High Resolution, which means it can output these soundtracks either in PCM format over the HDMI output or via the analog outputs. For newer receivers, the BD-P1400 also offers bitstream output for high-resolution soundtracks. So if you have a newer receiver with onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, you can set the BD-P1400 to output audio over HDMI in encoded bitstream format--letting your receiver do the decoding, rather than the player. There should be absolutely no sound quality difference whether you let the receiver decode or the player decode, but some AV fans just love seeing the "Dolby TrueHD" light on their new receiver. The only addition we'd really like to see on the BD-P1400 is onboard DTS-HD Master Audio decoding so even those with older receivers could take advantage of this format, but it's not a major complaint since there are no other Blu-ray or HD DVD players with that capability.

my apologies ... its really hard for anyone to say any electronic device or component is "future proof" now days.

but in terms of blu ray, the ps3 is reported to be profile 2.0 compliant with future firmware upgrades not currently available. So, in theory, while there are currently no 2.0 compliant players on the market, the technology is there and will be implemented in the probable near future. So while you are only buying a 1.1 player today, you will be able to upgrade to 2.0 in the future.

no other stand alone 1.0 profile players, or 1.1 profile players have this capability to upgrade profiles. only the ps3.

Very similar when you're buying computer hardware that will carry you through the next 4 to 5 years. Future proof, a way to describe stability in something today that will benefit you tomorrow.

Nice, mr peepers.

Yes, I can say PS3 is future-proof with the ability to update it's firmware very easily. It's like your PC.

The standalone players, well, it's like another electronic device, like your table fan.

Though there are some players that can update their firmware, but it's tedious and there's not enough online support and community for it like the PS3.

Just my thoughts.

I do not remeber ever seeing that ps3 will be able to do profile 2.0 for bd live, hopefully but nothing definitive, the other nice thing is that ps3 only one with wifi capabilities, nice. but they need dts hd and true hd capabilities

you're right in the fact that a date has not yet been set on when the 2.0 upgrade will be released for PS3, but at CES, Sony did make the official announcement that an upgrade will be available for PS3 to make it 2.0 compliant in the coming months.

also, PS3 will pass dolby trueHD, but no DTS HD MA. That is also said to be slated for a future firmware update as well.

is it sad that i know more about ps3 and its capabilities than most, and i have never once owned any generation of a playstation?

ugh....haha

I don't fully understand, I'm considering buying a BDP1400 for £239. Now I am aware that it is Profile 1.0, and Samsung say that it is upgradeble firmware, surely this means that I can upgrade to the later profiles, can someone help me understand a little more, or point me in the right direction... thanks!

you're a little bit confused i think.

the samsung is profile 1.0. that is the best this player will be. it will not be able to support profile 1.1 or 2.0 because both of those need internal memory or hard drive space. the samsung has neither.

so with this player, you will never be able to use the PiP function on some of the newer discs, nor will you be able to utilize the BD Live or 2.0 features that you can use while connected to the internet to get ringtones, movie trailors, etc.

now for me, all that stuff is useless. i dont have any plans on watching director commentary while the movie is playing. this player works great for just watching movies, thats it.

when samsung says it can upgrade its firmware, thats basically its ability to upgrade the software inside the machine which allows it to play some of the newer blu ray discs that have a different video codecs or the newer java blu ray discs.

the only machine that can upgrade profiles is the ps3. the ps3 started out as a profile 1.0 machine, upgraded to 1.1 (which is its current profile), and will be upgraded to profile 2.0 in the future with no definite release date.

so all in all, if you're looking for a player that will be able to take advantage of all those extras like PiP and BD live, stick with a ps3 or wait for standalone players to come out with the new profile 2.0 later this year. if all you want to do is watch movies and thats it, the samsung is fine choice.

Most helpful, to be honest I have an Xbox360 too, so I download most trailers through that, so no biggy for me. If I buy this player will it be able to play all Blu-ray DVDs, or will eventually have to upgrade the player again?

n.b I'm not too interested in commentaries, PiP, and Live content.
