Default Playing CD Games on Audio CD Players

A friend and I were reminiscing about old games and we talked about doing this. This mainly worked on older PC, SEGA CD, and SEGA Saturn discs.

Some discs had the games' soundtrack (the PC game The 7th Guest) whereas others had weird beeps and sounds. I remember one game for the SEGA CD, Mansion of Hidden Souls, had a Japanese woman speaking for about 2 mins.

I wanted to know if anyone else did this and for what games.

Playing Quake on a CD player will play the game's score by Trent Reznor.

Tobal for PS1 had the soundtrack CD built into the game CD.

Yep, I was quite thrilled as a kid to find that all the music from CD-ROM games could be played this way. I was able to play (and eventually rip) the music from all of these:
  • Battlezone II
  • Cyberstorm 2
  • Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight
  • Frogger (1997 version)
  • Incoming
  • Mechwarrior 2
  • Mechwarrior 2: Ghost Bear's Legacy
  • Mechwarrior: Mercenaries
  • Sam and Max Hit the Road
  • The 7th Guest
I still like listening to some of these sometimes. Mechwarrior's soundtrack was great.

SegaCD was such a great system for it's redbook audio. I think my all time favorite was Batman Returns.

Sony's PS did this for awhile too until the later years. If you can ever find a copy of MDK, I would highly suggest grabbing it. Also DOOM has it's alternative horror tracks as opposed to the rock pcm music of the pc version. I forget who composed it at Midway, but the guy is now selling the tracks individually, but the game itself will give you the complete album.

Many CD-based games throughout the 1990s featured CD audio as well as data. The console would first load the game data, then seek to the appropriate audio track, then once the track was playing, the game data would run inside of the hardware. Some PlayStation games used this technique while others contained audio within the game data. All PlayStation 2 games, including those on CDs, contained audio within the game data.
