TriStar Acquires ‘The Woman King’ Starring Viola Davis and Lupita Nyong’o

TriStar Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to the feature film “The Woman King,” inspired by true events and based on an original story by Maria Bello, starring Viola Davis and Lupita Nyong’o.

The film is produced by Cathy Schulman’s Welle Entertainment, Davis and Julius Tennon of JuVee Productions, and Bello of Jack Blue Productions.

“‘The Woman King’ is the powerful true story of an extraordinary mother-daughter relationship,” said Hannah Minghella, president of TriStar Pictures. “And there’s no-one more extraordinary than Viola Davis and Lupita Nyong’o to bring them to life.”

Inspired by true events that took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries, “The Woman King” tells the story of Nanisca (Davis), general of the all-female military unit known as the Amazons, and her daughter Nawi (Nyong’o), who together fought the French and neighboring tribes who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.

“‘The Woman King’ has the potential to be a game changer for women of color everywhere,” said Tennon. “Viola and our team at JuVee are beyond excited to partner with Sony/TriStar to bring these fierce women to the big screen.”

Minghella and Nicole Brown will oversee the project for TriStar Pictures.

“‘Black Panther’ just showed us how the power of imagination and lore could reveal a world without gender and racial stereotypes,” said Schulman. “‘The Woman King’ will tell one of history’s greatest forgotten stories from the real world in which we live, where an army of African warrior women staved off slavery, colonialism and inter-tribal warfare to unify a nation.”

‘The Old Guard’s’ Gina Prince-Bythewood to Direct ‘Woman King’ Starring Viola Davis (EXCLUSIVE)

Gina Prince-Bythewood is set to direct TriStar Pictures’ “The Woman King,” starring Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis.

The film is a historical epic inspired by true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The story follows Nanisca (Davis), general of the all-female military unit, and her daughter Nawi, who together fought the French and neighboring tribes who violated their honor, enslaved their people and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.

The pic is being produced by Cathy Schulman’s Welle Entertainment, Davis and Julius Tennon of JuVee Productions and Maria Bello of Jack Blue Productions.

It’s time that they truly occupy their place in history and in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s hands, it will be a gamechanger. Prince-Bythewood has directed and written such influential films as “Love & Basketball,” “The Secret Life of Bees” and “Beyond the Lights.”

Most recently, Prince-Bythewood directed the Netflix and Skydance’s action-drama “The Old Guard,” with Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne leading the cast. The Netflix original, based on the comic book series by author Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández, debuted on the streaming platform last Friday and drew praise from critics and audiences alike. Prince-Bythewood’s other credits include the special event series “Shots Fired,” on which she and her husband, Reggie Rock Bythewood, served as series creators and executive producers.

Prince-Bythewood is repped by CAA and attorney Nina Shaw of Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein & Lezcano.

I looked up the actual history of Dahomey and that description is very very loosely based on reality.

Oh I know, but there are people that think Wakanda is real. Ty Cobb is still vilified to this day due to the movie Cobb which has been debunked.

I didn't see much in the trailer to suggest this will be a particularly rousing action flick, but Viola Davis certainly looks capable. What a physical transformation for someone in their late 50s.
