Default Need help. HDMI to Christie LCD projector

Hey guys... My friend (the artistic director of the theatre I work at) just got the S300 Blu-ray player. We wanted to run the player through the nice but (semi-dated) Christie LCD projector. Using component cables, we are able to watch movies at 1080i resolution. 1080i is as high as this projector will produce images. Anyhow, we want to upconvert standard DVD's to 1080i which will have to be done via HDMI. The projector has a few different inputs but no HDMI input. It has a DVI, so we bought a DVI to HDMI cable and went straight to the BD player. It gets a signal, but there is never a picture...no matter the settings I choose. My question is, will it be possible for this to work and produce an image from DVI to HDMI or is the projector too dated?

Edit: sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum.
