Woo HOO! after weeks of looking, I finally managed to get the samsung here in canberra at Harvey Norman Fyshwick, While in the states I picked up the Fifth Element which looks great, other then some grain and the occasional flicker of dirt I could not see the softness that others had complained about. Unfortunately the Blu-ray disc region encoding is on and so was the the SD-DVD encoding. Out of the 5 US titles I had, Corpse Bride, The Fugitive, Tomb Raider and Fifth Element played, however Brother Grimm is region encoded, I then tried my DVD of Corpse Bride, because it is purely region 1 and it said it could not play it due to region encoding, so I input the code and voila, region free DVD playback, however the Blu-ray side is still region-encoded.
I highly recommend this to any one in australia, I have not seen any of the issues reported by American Users. Picture rocks, if noise reduction is turned on I can't tell as none of the usual blurring or softness is present in the picture. Here is the instructions I used to make the standard DVD playback region free if anyone wants to know. Again this did not work for the bluray disc playback only regular dvd. 1. Make sure the player is switched on, and is at the Samsung logo screen. 2. Also check the tray is shut and that there's no disc in the player. 3. Now press the REPEAT button on the remote, followed by a five digit code. 4. This code is different depending on what region your player is *currently* set to: R1 - 29334 R2 - 38767 R3 - 56732 R4 - 76884 R5 - 53814 R6 - 24462 So for example if you have an R2 player, press REPEAT-3-8-7-6-7. 5. If you've done this correctly (and your player is compatible with the hack), you should see a number at the top left corner of the screen corresponding to the current region. 6. Now, pressing any number from 1 to 6 will change to the corresponding region. Or, press 9 for "auto-region" mode. 7. Next, press OPEN/CLOSE to open the tray, followed by Standby (or DVD POWER) on the remote to close it and put the player into Standby mode. 8. The next time you turn your player on, the new region will be set. Don't forget that if you want to hack it again, you'll need to use a different code, as listed above. If it's currently set to "region 9", use the code for the last *proper* region you set it to. Sorry Just realised I posted this in the movies section and not the players section. Is there a direct link to the article, I can't find it on amazon uk.
Yup, I think it's a UK Player thing. |

Applefiend - Just worked out why the region hack didn't work for my region 4 player.
I had disabled the On Screen Warnings to get rid of the "HDMI Audio not supported" message. It looks like the region dialog is using that category of display (rather than the menu system). If you enable the messages in Menu/Display then try the sequence again it should work. Cheers |

I thought I had heard that wouldn't work if you have the firmware upgrade, so maybe that's why. Don't quote me on that though.

One would assume though that the Australian decks would be of the same firmware class as upgraded US decks considering the differences in launch dates. I don't recally when the Sammy got its upgrade but I believe it was before the Aussie debut.

I'm pretty sure it was too. I think it was August for the upgraded players coming from the manufacturer and it may have been late September for the downloadable firmware upgrade. I can't recall when I update my Sammy, but I'm pretty sure it was late September.
