if you consider HD DVD is still here to fight, then get LG dual burner
if not, then pioneer might be the best value

Forget HD-DVD especially if you can't get a HD DVD burner. But HD DVD is garbage anyways, go with BLU! and get a BLU RAY BURNER!!! I love mine. If I had extra money to spend on a drive I'd try to get the fastest Blu RAy Burner possible.

I am not interested in Hd Dvd playback. Which blu-ray player/burner do you recommend?

if it's by design, then it's sony. I love the design. But pioneer, I believe, offered more choice (well at least in UK)

(I know for laptop, the best drive is panasonic, but for desktop I don't really know)

Pioneer has been a staple for us. We've used them both as internal drives and in an external case connected with USB 2. We burn thousands of discs and have never had a mechanical failure. (We eventually burn out the lasers and replace the drives but you shouldn't have that problem.)
