Default Onkyo 605 Problem (HELP PLEASE).

Problem playing 20th Century Fox Titles
Firstly the equipment.
Onkyo 605 + PS3 + Panasonic TH50PZ70 all components connected with HDMi. Running the PS3 through the 605 and HDMi cable from 605 to TV. I have 5.1 system. Speakers are B&W 501's.
Okay two days ago i tried to watch Independence Day but the 605 turned itself off around 25 minutes into the film. There was no excessive heat problems and there is at least 4” of circulation around the amp. I turned off the system and restarted and at exactly the same point in the film the amp again turned off. So i restarted from the menu selecting the chapter after where the problem manifested. It played for around 15minutes and again the amp turned off. I then decided to try the disc on my second PS3 upstairs which is plugged directly into the TV. No problems the film played straight through so it appeared it was not a disc problem.
Today i tried to watch X-men 3 and the amp turned off about 5 minutes into the film. I checked the speaker cables and there does not appear to be a problem.
So i checked a non-Fox title, Black Snake Moan and its playing perfectly through the 605 but then its only playing DD5.1
The FOX titles only appear to have DTS HD MA. Is this the reason the amp is turning itself off? Also the standby red light is flashing.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP.

my first guess is to say either a speaker is not firmly connected, or you have the speaker wire polarity connected backwards (negative when should be positive).

did you just set the system up or recently connected speaker wire? or has it played fine before?

First, lets isolate the problem
Run the player to the tv
leave the amp off and let it play
should be no problem ( no sound, but no problem )
this means that the problem is the receiver or speakers
next, remove your surround speakers
let it run, if no problem move to the next set of speakers

lets see what this yeilds

I have many Fox titles and have not had a problem with any but I'm not using the hdmi cable for audio since my mits ws-65905 doesn't accept it or my denon 3806. I would that guess that they are having hdmi issues with the HCDP. Have you checked to see if the onkyo has an update that you can get or maybe try a different brand of hdmi cable. I just read a review about the tx-sr875 and they used a sony, toshiba, and panasonic blu ray/hd dvd players connected with hdmi and they could not play an audio cd without it skipping every 2 seconds unless the video part was turned on. Not that helps your problem but i think it's an hdmi issue. i just went to Onkyo's site and there is a firmware update but it wants serial # and stuff hope this helps.

I have checked other non-FOX titles and they are working fine. Why do you think there maybe a cable problem if other non-FOX titles work? Thanks for the feedback guys.

I have a PS3 and 605 connected through HDMI and have had no problems whatsoever.

My first suggestion would be to go to your PS3 settings, select Sound Settings, select Audio Output Settings, then HDMI (if that's what it's connected via), then select Automatic, and then hit X to accept. I would also advise going into BD/DVD settings and turning off dynamic range, and setting Audio Output Format (HDMI) to Bitstream.

I'm not completely sure, but the 605 might have a fail safe mode to protect your speakers if you are trying to pass through something not supported. The PS3 settings I described above will allow the PS3 to automatically detect what auto formats and frequencies are supported by your 605 and adjust to them accordingly.

If none of that works, the PS3 likely has nothing to do with the problem and you should take the others advice and try doing what you were doing without speakers connected.

Okay I tried this but again with the FOX title and it shut off at the exact same place in the film.

And yet there is no problems with Space Odyssey(WB) and Black Snake Moan(Paramount) .

Is the blinking constant, or is it like 5 blinks? 7? Sometimes manufacturer's will use the standby light to signal issues with the receiver, similar to a check engine light on a car. With that info Onkyo could tell you exactly what the issue was.

I think, just think, it may be sending audio / frequency to a speaker that no other movie is using... or some handshaking issue, at this point just need info and to remove possible items
are they the same soundtrack type DTS, HD, LPCM, etc ?? Maybe your amp is bad only when it goes into one of these modes... What happens if you hit " Pure " ?? and remove the codec's ??

Guys you were right. Two problems. One of the rear speaker cables was loose but more importantly the +/- on one of the AV connections was inversly connected. Works perfectly now Thank God.

Oh the joys of home cinema.
