Default PS3 or receiver issues....help?!

Hi everyone, here is the scenario: my girlfriend's parents bought a new theater system and had it installed from the "geek squad" from best buy. They purchased:

Samsung LN-T4661F TV
Yamaha RX-V661 receiver
PS3

The issue is during movie playback (doesn't matter if its a BD or DVD), the screen will flash/flicker completely off then back on again repeatedly. They do have a high definition cable box (also runs through the receiver) with no problems. It seems odd, but when we play games with it, everything works fine. This is occurs only when playing movies.

I have hooked up the HDMI wire directly from the PS3 to the TV and that seems to fix the problem. It seems to be an issue with PS3 setting? However, I'm not familiar withe PS3 but have heard that certain settings can "confuse" a receiver...is that accurate?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what my next step might be? Or perhaps an answer if this is common?

THanks!
