The HD-DVD shill point I've seen most, post-Warner announcement, is "HD-DVD loss = consumer loss." I guess in their logic the most widely supported format is the most anti-consumer?

If you ask me, suckering hundreds of thousands of people into trading their hard earned cash for electronics that were destined to fail = anti-consumer. But I digress. If these people honestly think what Toshiba, Microsoft, Universal, and Paramount had going on was pro-consumer, there is no hope for them.

And that Washington Post article is a bunch of crap. "The real winner will be iTunes and downloads." Please! If that is the new HD-DVD talking point, I've got news for them: they are wrong again! The new iTunes, Netflix and XBox downloads aren't even truly High Definition. They are highly over-compressed 720p movies that are basically a little better than DVD quality.

The point still remains: if you want the best in high definition content to take full advantage of your HDTV, Blu-Ray is where it's at.

Blu-ray is more pro-consumer than anything...

and the PS3 is on another planet of "consumer friendliness"...for 600 bucks, it's pretty much a PC that has a unique range of capabilities..

No doubt. You can install linux on the thing if you want and use it as a workstation and doing so is not a hack but something that is supported from the XMB interface by Sony.

As far as I know, there is no non-hack way of doing something similar on the Xbox 360 which also uses proprietary Hard Discs instead of standard SATA drives like the PS3.

Ok the wash post guy said this:

Quote:
According to the info tucked in with new Blu-ray movies, the DVD- or CD-sized discs crank out a picture with a resolution that is six times greater than DVD. To put it plainly, though, I've found that I can't really tell the difference between the picture cranked out by a Blu-ray player and the picture delivered by an "upconverting" DVD player designed to make standard DVDs look their best on high-definition sets.
ding...ding...ding...

He's probably got a 720p/1080i TV and doesn't know the difference.

And then he says this:

Quote:
(In any case, it's also worth noting that many such players will also play standard DVDs, so these folks aren't exactly going to be stuck replacing their entire video library.)
many, last time I heard they ALL play standard dvd's....

Just another misinformed reporter ignorant of the REAL facts....

Someone should also tell him PS3's are no longer $600, but $399.

Welcome to the fud washpost.....

Musgrove is like my dad: he really likes the idea of gadgets and gizmos, but their true benefit and technology is lost on him.

Is he NUTS? Blu has 6 times the PQ of S-DVD! Let's also not forget next-gen audio that sounds great on even the most "budget-friendly" speaker packages. Hell, I'd bet that even Helen Keller could tell the difference between S-DVD and Blu-ray. WTF is wrong with Mike?

Saying the PQ and AQ of Blu when compared to S-DVD isn't mind-blowing is like a cart-n-buggy owner looking at a modern car and saying "meh".
