Default Watching SW Dvds on my PS3... Where's the DD-EX???

Just finished hooking up my speakers, (7.1 setup), & now I can't seem to get my surround rear speakers to work.

I know they're plugged in right since the test pattern on my receiver works fine... but if I run the THX optimizer off my SW discs, the surround rear test just comes out of my two side speakers.

I've tried setting my PS3 to bitstream, even tried to output audio through optical instead of HDMI, but still can't get those rear speakers to work. They don't even light up on my receiver. Can the PS3 even output rear channel?

- Receiver is a Yamaha HTR 6090.

P.S: One scene in particular that I've been using to test is in Ep3 right at the begining where Obi & Anakin fly their ships through an explosion.

On my old Pioneer receiver, the sound used to go right behind me.

Any help would be appreciated.

The reason you may not be getting the EX part of the sound to come on is because you have to manually set it on your receiver. Not all receivers detect the EX flag and I believe some discs are the culprit of that. So, when you play a DVD such as Episode 3, you should manually press the EX button on your receiver/remote. That should do the trick.

Yamaha has manual and automatic detection settings from DD EX. Press the EX button on your remote until you see Dolby Digital EX/ES on your Yamaha's display. It might take two or three pushes.

Also, make sure you have the PS3 set to bitstream in the DVD sound menu. You want to make sure it's not sending 2 channel LPCM to your receiver. I have the HTR-5960, and the 6080 has a nearly identical setup, except for the lack of an HDMI input. Hopefully, you can get it to work.

Also, using the same SW disc, try going through the THX optimization tests for surround sound. The speaker tests will tell you if everything is working properly with DVD playback through your PS3. If you've never used the THX optimizor, just click on it from the language section of the DVD menu.
