Default Poll: Which Studio will Drop DVD first?

In your opinion what studio do you think will be the first to drop DVD and only release on blu-ray?

That is a very hard thing to comment on. DVD is still selling so well over all HDM that any speculation is pure... speculation, a complete guess. There is no way to know which will drop DVD since it is not likely to happen for many years yet.

forgot lionsgate, i shouldve put a nobody will stop dvd production option, so if you think of either of those, just write them in..

i do think that sony will stop producing dvds in about 8 years or so. they are always the first to drop old tech. it seems. however, every other studio will still support dvd until another format comes out IMO.

If any company completely drops DVD in favor of Blu-ray, it will be Sony.... I can't see that happening though.

that's years away if ever, but if studios do start dropping DVD i bet Sony would be the first simply for the sake of royalties, they would prefer a quick exodus from DVD to BD. other studios will probably hold on to DVD as long as there's a market still lingering for it.

how long did it take the first studio to drop VHS, then we can gauge from there. But as Bill Hunt said, (and I'm Paraphrasing) the success of DVD was a once in a lifetime phenomenon. So gauging how quickly a studio dropped VHS and how quickly studios will drop DVD may not be that accurate.
I think 5 years from now, DVD's will be both extremely cheap and in a minority to Blu-ray. DVD's are a 40 Billion Dollar business, almost double that of what the Box office's take in. Studio's will wait as long as possible for them to be sure those numbers are going to transfer into another format.
I truly hope Blu-ray is as successful as DVD. I think with the new age of TV's and HD DVR's, Blu-rays will take off. 5 years from now, I bet 90% of households will have at least one HDTV.

So, does anyone know how long it took the first studio to drop VHS?

I see Sony dropping DVD first since Blu-Ray is set to be a major money maker for them with the PS3. Although I do not see this happening for a few years. It won't happen until both Universal and Paramount start releasing on Blu-Ray, and not until Blu-Ray starts to take up a decent amount of the market relative to DVD.

DVD will become the "VHS tape" in a several years, movies will still come out on them, they will be dirt cheap, theres always some cheapo that still buys DVDs and doesnt get with the times.

I said Disney because they are so tired of getting ripped off by bootlegs.

Fox because they love their copy protection so much. The sooner they`re out of crappy DVD`s the better for them I say.

Default nobody is going to any time soon

i doubt that any studio would drop dvd for quite awhile. the percentage sold in dvd is by far the largest. the studios are in it for the money and right now dvd is where their bread is being buttered.

I predict DVD will take twice as long to die as VHS.

I'd say Sony, but it's not going to happen until 2014 at the very earliest would be my guess.

None. As long as money can be made from DVD, then they'll keep making them.

I said Fox for the same reason and they favor anything that hurts the bootleggers...

and of course...all studio's do..but Fox seems to be really trying to prevent the bootleggers from getting their high def movies onto the streets...

but why would any studio cut off DVD?...I think it would be done slowly by every studio when the next format is made clear without argument...
