Default User CP change, Forums/threads being "marked as read" willy-nilly

Hi folks. I have a beef with how/when the site chooses to mark all threads in a forum/sub-forum as "read"... that seems to happen every time I visit any place on the forum, no matter where that is.

This isn't consistent with behaviour of other forums I'm familiar with. Because of this, I can't assume that clicking the "goto newpost" blue down-arrow symbol will actually take me to where I last left off in that particular thread.

I'd rather the following behaviour:

- a discussion thread doesn't get marked as "read" until I actually um, click thru and read it... or, until I click the button saying 'mark forums read'... until I do so, then all threads in any forum should remain bolded.

Is it possible for there to be a setting to toggle, to make the forum less aggressive in this regard?
