Guys I'm having a real hard time making the transition from medium to hard on guitar. It's not so much the speed at which the notes come at me as it is the addition of the 5th fret (orange). I just cannot seem to make my fingers react correctly. My question to you guys who play, how do you deal with this? Do you stretch your pinky out to push the orange button or do you slide your whole hand down where the third finger is on blu and the pinky is on orange? I'm just having a complete mental block on how master the addition of the 5th fret!

Mostly slide, but sometimes I stretch. After you do it for awhile you get used to it, but it's a rough transition.

Your pinky is your weakest finger, so it's best not to make it do all the hard work.
I generally play through expert with my hand rooted on the red fret (RYBO position), and slide my hand down for green notes (GRYB position). If you're playing on hard, there's probably not a lot of orange, so you can probably play in GRYB position most of the time. A tip for the future... if you need to slide to hit a streak that goes from green to orange (or vice versa), do the sliding with your index finger, not your pinky. |

actually, my ring finger is my weakest. Happened when I started playing guitar I was like "i'll just use my pinky for power chords, then i'll have a stronger pinky" well my ring finger suffered. To this day it feels weird to play a power chord with my ring finger.

I'd suggest though that your problem isn't a lack of strength in your ring finger, but a lack of control of that finger. Finger independence, if you will. If you ever come across a tool called "gripmaster" check it out - you hold it in your hand and it has keys for your fingers to press that are spring-loaded for resistance. Good for building strength if you're really looking for a helper. Alternatively, start running scales at 16th notes at 180bpm up and down the neck... you'll fix that finger in no time haha! |

I always keep my left hand in "second" position (starting with red) and keep it there for most of the time. I find that it's much easier to stretch with my index finger than my pinky finger. It's also easier to tell where you are on the fretboard.
