Quote:
Darkness lurks behind the bright lights of a traveling carnival in one of the most haunting and perverse film noirs of the 1940s. Adapted from the scandalous best seller by William Lindsay Gresham, Nightmare Alley gave Tyrone Power a chance to subvert his matinee-idol image with a ruthless performance as Stan Carlisle, a small-time carny whose unctuous charm propels him to fame as a charlatan spiritualist, but whose unchecked ambition leads him down a path of moral degradation and self-destruction. Although its strange, sordid atmosphere shocked contemporary audiences, this long difficult-to-see reflection of postwar angst has now taken its place as one of the defining noirs of its era—a fate-fueled downward slide into existential oblivion.

Aren't Criterion announcements usually on the 15th?

Oh yeah!! Had this preordered (and cancelled) twice from Signal One. Very glad that it's getting a US Criterion release instead. Finally! Excellent news!

It's a holiday, sometimes they do it early when that's the case

HELL YES! I was hoping they had this film, since it is in desperate need of a Blu-ray, and here it is! What a great year from Criterion with History is Made at Night and The Parallax View!

Excellent news! Now I can cancel my amazon.co.uk pre-order I had since 2018... I don't know if SignalOne will ever release it.

Glad to see a catalog Fox title making it out in 2021 that never got a Blu-ray release pre-Disney buy out.

Woohoo! Very excited for this one! The cover art is kind of shoddy looking though. The title and illustration are fine, but the bottom font looks kind of phoned-in.

I think it's meant to look kind of hand-painted like you might have found at a circus act.

And it's February, a shorter month.

More film noir from Criterion? Yes please.

Default Up The Alley

Nightmare indeed, and plenty of time to marinate until Del Toro hits the streets.

I kind of expected a Guillermo del Toro appreciation piece but I guess he was too busy or didn't want to be 'too near' to this version now that he's making another adaptation.

Yeah, a del Toro supplement would have been great, and I'm disappointed to be missing out on the Michael Brooke commentary and 28-page booklet slated for the m.i.a. Signal One release...but all things considered am stoked for Criterion's edition.

Never seen this, but I'm a sucker for classic noir, and with Del Toro's remake scheduled for later this year...

Superb news. Criterion answering my prayers. Just yesterday over in the Eureka thread I was lamenting the fact that I was worrying that we would never get this. Love this film ever since it was shown on Noir Alley a few years ago. Probably Tyrone Power's best performance and another stellar performance from the always wonderful Joan Blondell

This one frustrated me the one time I saw it years ago. Willing to give it another chance with this restoration.

As I understand it, a passion project that Fox did for TP to keep their star happy. (although they were concerned about it hurting his box office appeal) The story is dark, but no where near as messed up as the Novel. Found a used paperback on ebay a few years ago, the description of "geeks" and the main characters inevitable decent is haunting.
