A Murder a Day Keeps the Landlord Away! When six mild-mannered senior citizens are told that their old brownstone is going to be torn down, they don’t take the news lightly! Led by a pixie-faced lady (Paula Trueman, The Outlaw Josey Wales), the oldsters decide they must exert “Gray Power” and take action. After a little plotting and planning, they become an oddly lovable assortment of “hit men,” carefully getting rid of those who would attempt to disrupt their lives. This hilarious horror story from director Larry Yust (Trick Baby) will not only make you laugh, it’ll also make you look twice at that sweet old lady who lives next door! Peter Brocco (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), Frances Fuller (They Might Be Giants), William Hansen (The Laughing Policeman), Ruth McDevitt (TV’s Kolchak: The Night Stalker) and Ian Wolfe (Witness for the Prosecution) round out the cast of pernicious pensioners. Beautifully photographed by Isidore Mankofsky (Somewhere in Time).

I thought this was an 80's slasher flick.

I don't know what to make of this. Sounds like it might be a good watch but I tend to dislike comedy-tinged horror films. I mean, how menacing and dangerous could a bunch of senior citizens be? I'm leaning towards a blind buy but I might wait for a bit.

I saw the film first-run back in the day, doubled with William Castle's SHANKS. Both mixed humor and genre elements.

As a comparative young person, HOMEBODIES did seem to me to be "a senior citizen's horror film."

Now that (AHEM!) I myself have become a senior citizen, I am looking forward to revisiting the film with that added perspective.

Someone can chime in on the quality of the blu-ray, as I haven't watched it yet, but the film is one of the most tragically overlooked films (bizarre, poignant, suspenseful, funny) of the 1970s, imo, and I was over the moon when I belatedly heard early this year that Kino had released it. It never even got a DVD or LD release, and the VHS was scarce.

Yes. Your only other option is an ancient VHS.

Sorry for posting this long after you asked the question but if you’re still curious:

The Blu-ray comes from a 2K restoration but I’m fairly convinced this came from a lower quality 35mm print and not the OCN. The grain and clarity tends to fluctuate. White are overblown, especially in daytime scenes. Colors are murky at some points but are adequate. There are certain scenes where I’m convinced it came from a VHS tape because the textures look very digitalized. Tons of scratches and other damages that can be seen in the bigger screen as well. Overall, it’s a very bad remaster but it may just be the fact that there isn’t a better source to restore. If this really is the film’s first release since the VHS era, then it’s still worth checking out for the film alone but don’t expect any great A/V quality.

Thank you for taking the time to inform me. I appreciate it. I might get it if it hits under $10 in the future
Thanks again.

I think there was quite a time delay between the first announcement and the actual release of the Blu-ray, so I assume that Kino spent that time searching for better film elements.

This site did announce that it had a 4K restoration, but the second announcement did state a 2K remaster. Don't know what happened in between announcements. This transfer probably utilizes the best surviving elements of this film, which is unfortunate, but this film probably could've been one step away from being a lost film much like Wake in Fright was (Both had VHS releases but didn't have another release until the Blu-ray era). That said, it is an absolutely phenomenal film, and I would consider it a gem although I understand that some people aren't huge fans of the film. Side Note: Really surprised this film passed with a PG, there is a scene or two that I feel like would be borderline R rating.
