for me it really depends on how much i am archiving and how "live" i need it to be. if i am archiving 300+ GB, i tend to need it "live." thus, tape isn't a good option and i have a hard time using any compression. that leaves me with hard drives as my medium of choice since cost per GB is so low. if it is anything less, it is typically no more than a few GBs in which case optical works perfect. the only time i have issues is when it is more than 2-3 DVD's and it's needed live. and then, i'll just say screw it and pop in a portable hard drive and call it a day.
