Default Anyone have a high powered HT in a small room?

I am in a 3 bedroom condo with a fairly large living room but by no means large enough in my taste for 7 speakers, etc. I dont want to piss off the neighbors next to me or below me with my thumping. I want to purchase a new onkyo 605 receiver and use my existing smaller speakers but was thinking it might be worth waiting til I have a larger living room (who knows how long considering the housing market BLOWS). Does anyone have a single family home/huge living room setup in an otherwise small space like a 1 bedroom apartment?

sorta, 12.5ftX11.5 room & yes I can piss off my neighbor, my sub can rattle their windows 30-40 ft away from my house, if my window is open some I don't like them so I don't care & they can't do a dam thing as long as is it between 8am & 10:30pm.
Condo &/or apartment it would be the worse, even on mid power I can rattle stuff in the other rooms & my house inside walls are 12in insulated & I did some (crapy) sound proofing. High power I can fell the rumble on the other side of the house (1600sqft house)

You can do some sound proofing:

you can use a buttkicker to feel the bass, so you (and your neighbors) don't have to hear it so much from the subwoofer.

just dont go too bass heavy and the neighbors wont mind...

i have a home theater in a rented one bedroom house. the house has a full-size bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, and living room. plus another small room in the back of the house...its an old house, so its not well insulated. my windows rattly sometimes too. depends on the frequency coming from the sub...i think its around 40-50hz or so.

i can turn my onkyo up to 65 and hear my system very clearly through the rest of the house. i can feel the bass at my mailbox(about 50 feet away from my front door). lower frequencies definitely travel further than higher ones.

this is with an onkyo tx-sr605 for my AVR
Polk center and mains (CS1 and Monitor 50s)
Pioneer bookshelf speakers for the surrounds and a Klipsch Synergy 12" sub.

with the volume at 55 on the onkyo it rings in around 80db. with it at 70 it rings in a 95-100db. this is using a radioshack digital spl meter

i think the living room i use is around 12x10. maybe a tad bigger...ive never measured it.

I have a 1 br, 800 sq. ft. apt. (that's the whole apt. area). I have a Denon 2308CI, 100 W per channel, powering Klipsch Synergy II series speakers all around (C-2, F-2's, 4 S-2's), and the Klipsch 10" rated at 200 W rms and 420 W peak. I am on floor three of three and have miraculously never heard a complaint; I watch movies at a loud volume. I've had the system for a little over a year (I just upgraded my receiver, the old one was 110 W/channel, but no lossless audio), and I always expect a knock at the door, or the next morning I look for a note on my door or a call from the office, but I have never had a thing. I think the soundproofing in my place is just absurdly good.

I would tell you to go for it, you can always turn it down a bit.

I'm in a small thin-walled one bedroom apartment on the second floor with a fairly decent home theater setup (Denon AVR-3808CI, Paradigm Studio 60s, Studio CC-690, Sony Surrounds, and Polk Audio PSW505). Later this year, I'm planning to buy a home, but decided to upgrade my equipment first to further enjoy the benefits of Blu-ray on my PS3. My system sounds great loud, but it also sounds great at lower volumes. Late night movie watching is a sheer pleasure listening to crystal clear audio and knowing my neighbors can fall asleep. Haven't had any complaints, especially from the overly sensitive lady below me. Do yourself a favor and upgrade your system. You’ll be amazed how well your system will sound at a lower volume… but it is very tempting to crank up.
