Default I just got an email from CNET

The title of the email is simply: "Will HD DVD make it to July?"

I think it's great that CNET is sending this email out letting people know the current state of things.

Here is part of what the email says:

"Dear CNET members,
Wow, I didn't know the format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray ended already. OK, it's not really over yet, but with the recent announcement of Warner Bros. dropping the HD DVD format entirely (by the end of May 2008) and exclusively going to the Blu-ray format has to hurt big time! And after reading things like "HD DVD's ship is sinking fast," "HD DVD: Buy, sell, or hold?," and this "Sales of HD DVD players plunge after Warner move"... Even as a person who has absolutely no stake or side in either of the format camps--I'll admit it looks mighty grave for HD DVD. But heck, it's not really over until the fat lady sings, right? (Wait, what's that I hear faintly in the background... ;-))

So given Warner Bros.' announcement, which leaves HD DVD with only 2 studios (Paramount and Universal) supporting them, do you think there's any chance HD DVD will survive? Sure, Toshiba has slashed prices on their entry-level HD DVD players, but is this their last attempt at a comeback--but what good is player when your many of your favorite high def flicks are in the other party's format? Well, the good news is that even if you own a HD DVD player and the format does fold, you can still always use your HD DVD player as an upscaling player, right?"

Only time will tell, some people are buying HD DVD players just because they're cheap.

thinking back, the day I got my PS3 (Dec 06), two DVD players ended up in storage its too bad not everyone had one. But im sure a decent upscaler would be nice to have around..does Sony have an HD-DUD model? LOL

I think that is ridiculous. Blu-ray players can also be used to upscale DVDs. Why not get the player that won this war instead of getting one that can only be used to upscale DVDs.

Curious as to who wrote this? Sounds like a personal opinion vs. anything larger or that would have more impact.

Do you know who's buying HD-DVD players? Just go over to the HDD and AVS forums and all the reds are buying "second" and "third" backup machines. One guy's signature said that he was currently using one A30 and had two more in unopened units as "backups". What lunacy?

+1

I totally agree - that's why Toshiba's move to sell HD DVD players as upscalers is futile.

Kage99.
Totally agree - that's what some people forget - those sales numbers are from "repeat" customers. The HD DVD fanaticism has essentially turned into a cult. It's quite evident at Home Theater Forum (has anyone read how openly bias the mods are over there for DUD - even signing that stupid-ass petition lol. The mods there are a joke.), HDD, and AVS, of course. I suspect once Paramount and Universal come aboard Blu and when the HD DVD is officially dead and no longer even being produced, these people will still cling and have their little forum where they can glorify DUD and continue to shun Blu-ray.

I wouldn't believe you but I've ready some of the red posts at AVS forum and anything is possible!

Actually, Max has said lately that Toshiba is still producing players, but on a very slow basis (main reason is player sales for Christmas has left them with a surplus). Check out the Insider's Thread.

Here specifically: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...9&postcount=87
