Default Stanley Kubrick on Blu-ray

Stanley Kubrick
(1928 - 1999)

US:

International (Region B, where US releases are A locked):

Box Sets:

Documentaries:

Note: Both the Criterion and Arrow releases of The Killing also include Killer's Kiss. The Kino Lorber UHD of The Killing is sold separately from the Kino Lorber UHD of Killer's Kiss. Both listed releases of Fear and Desire also include The Seafarers (Eureka also includes Day of the Flight and The Flying Parade.

Also of note: I have featured every US blu-ray/UHD release that comes to mind (in terms of transfer/disc, not packaging).
- The first listed edition of Spartacus has excessive DNR, the second features a remastered 1080 BD.
- The first listed edition of Dr. Strangelove from Sony has less bonus features, the Criterion edition has all available (to my knowledge), the UHD too has all of the Criterion/Sony extras.
- The first listed edition of Barry Lyndon from Warner is an older transfer, the Criterion is from a 4K transfer and features original framing.
- The first listed edition of Full Metal Jacket is an MPEG-2 encode, the second is superior with a VC-1 encode.

Collectable Packaging (from around the globe):

Steelbooks:

Digibooks:

Zavvi UK - UHD Deluxe Editions:

Other releases:

Are you sure there's no already an existing thread? I can't believe no one did a Kubrick Blu-ray thread.

I looked and couldn't find one. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I was a bit shocked when nothing was coming up.

I’d have thought there was one, but don’t recall seeing it. Glad you did it.

There are several releases missing. The criterion Dr Strangelove immediately comes to mind. Are you only including those that have the best PQ?

That's why I put the Sony release, but I'll add the Criterion also.

EDIT: Added

Encodes are better, less compression artifacts.

EDIT: I would have thought anyway. Looking at caps a holic, the encode for Paths of Glory is largely the same. As for The Killing, it looks to be one of the better encodes for a Criterion blu-ray.

Both Arrow and Criterion "The Killing" have their pros and cons. Criterion has more high frequency grain but it comes at the cost of the encoding looking like ass. Arrow might be more tightly encoded but the grain is pretty filtered (I assume this was more of MGM modifying Criterion's master for other labels) and some scenes can look a bit too processed at times. I would hope a 4K would remedy the of the issues of both Blus.

I added collectable packaging (steelbook, Digibooks, and Zavvi UK UHD sets). Any suggestions you might have are accepted and appreciated!

I also added sequels and changed the international section to include B locked/all region equivalent releases as counterparts to the US section. Once again, suggestions are appreciated!

Stanley Kubrick is my most favorite director

"Here's Johnny!" (The Shining)

"Viddy well, little brother, viddy well" (A Clockwork Orange)

"You talk the talk. Do you walk the walk?" (Full Metal Jacket)

"Hello, HAL. Do you read me, HAL?" (2001: A Space Odyssey)

Just watched Lolita and it was fantastic!

[Show spoiler]James Mason's performance as Humbert is perfect. The duality between his disinterest, disgust, and scheming when he's with Shelley Winters, then the flip after he picks up Lolita from camp and becomes overly protective and paranoid is excellent. Peter Sellers is also perfect, as always. Sue Lyon also did an amazing job.

Agreed! I've always heard it sorta put down relative to his other works, but I loved it.

Hopefully the 4K is coming soon. I just ordered the BD with a gift card from Christmas, so no major loss and I'll get to see it before the 4K comes out.
