Shogun's Samurai AKA The Yagyu Conspiracy (Discotek 2022)

One of the best Japanese films of all time is getting a Blu-ray from Discotek in the US. Shogun's Samurai! This one has it all for Samurai fans and is basically Battles Without Honor, but with Samurai. It even has Kinji Fukasaku directing Toshiro Mifune! The cast is nearly perfect and the battles frequent. One of the most bad ass duels in Samurai film is also in this film. I've been requesting Arrow to release this for YEARS. Discotek encoding is the best in the business, so the disc should look really good, but lets see if they use the recent 4K remaster that was shown on Toei TV.

Bummer, Discotek doesn't have a distributor in Canada, so they are very expensive for us to import. I was hoping Criterion or Arrow would release this. I guess it's better than nothing?

Edit: I just realised I used to own the dvd for this. Admittedly, I don't remember much of the movie. :P

It's really good. It shares a lot of the same themes as a lot of the Shaw films, so I think you would really like it upon another viewing since you don't remember it. It has numerous "holy shit" moments. Plus one of the greatest cast line ups in Japanese film history.

This is such great news! Blind-bought this one on DVD many years ago and really enjoyed it. Glad to see another Mifune film make it to BD too

Nice! I believe it also has an early role by Hiroyuki Sanada. I hope some of his early 80s Japanese action films like Shogun's Ninja, The Blazing Valiant, and Roaring Fire will get an eventual Blu-ray release over here.

I'll take all of those in a heartbeat especially Roaring Fire. Shogun's Ninja was released on Blu-ray and is still in print? However, it's a two pack with Killing Machine. Older masters, but suitable. Still more Sanada is welcomed, even in films where he has a cameo like GI Samurai.

I ordered it using the link you provided. I'd never heard of that company before, but they were great! It arrived 6 days after purchase in a sturdy, cardboard, wrap-around shipping thingamajig that kept it in mint condition.

I'm thankful Discotek used the cool original poster art for the slip. The sleeve has different imagery on the front, and the flipside has photos.

I'm not well-versed in technical stuff, so I'll leave that for the better-informed people to comment on in any detail. But to my eye, the colors looked natural and I didn't notice any damage to the print.

Revisiting the film was a good experience. Lots of underhanded political plotting, mass skirmishes, a few brief duels, and an amazing cast. Hiroyuki Sanada is only 17 or 18 years old here, but already shining brightly. Sonny Chiba is fantastic as Yagyu Jubei, a role he'd go on to play many more times.

In addition to a few trailers, there are some interesting historical notes on the time period, people, and events surrounding the film's events.

Aw man. As someone who usually gets rid of the slip, this isn't good new for me. Can you describe what the art on the sleeve looks like? Going to be hard to beat that poster.

My copy is out for delivery, so really can't wait to watch this again. I can now get rid of my DVD. Will be interesting to see how it looks.

I've seen this a couple times on DVD, but don't remember much other than there were a ton of characters and I liked it. Figure I'm due for another watch. Just ordered from rightstufanime. They always package well, the few times I've ordered from them.

So just finished watching Shogun's Samurai. Wow. I'm actually quite impressed how this turned out. It's for sure from the new 4K master and it looks much different from the older master in terms of colors, but man does it looks sharp. Encode is great

The film hold up really well, and even though I've seen this maybe 5 times before, I was still enthralled with the story and characters. The film flies by at a lightening speed and is truly one of the best Samurai films ever made.

Either way, fantastic film and hopefully we get more Samurai titles from AnimEigo.

That is disappointing to hear.

If it's off by the same amount throughout, I can at least attempt to correct it with the audio delay setting on my receiver. But it sounds like the sync varies from scene to scene?
