Default Yamaha receivers any good?

How is this receiver compared to the 605?

http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/p...3&CTID=5000400

The audio company that is installing my system I believe no longer carries onkyo I believe they said now they only have Pioneer, Denon, and Yamaha. They recommended this yamaha

I've owned 3 Yamaha receivers. Still have two of them.

Currently I am using the HTR 6190 and love it.

I'd go for Yamaha. No worries about that.

That Yamaha doesn't decode the new high def codecs (TrueHD, HD-MA). It does have Pre-outs though while the 605 doesn't I believe. If you got the 705 then you'd have 'em.

I prefer the sound of Yamaha over the other mid to high end receivers such as Denon. They have a solid reputation.

I think you'll be thrilled with the Yamaha. Yamaha originally started in the 1800's as a musical instrument builder, so they have a long history of audio experience. I have two Yamaha receivers, and I've previously owned a Yamaha 500 watt separate amp. Yamaha's offer a highly detailed dynamic sound with very little distortion. It's not bright, so the trebles are not fatiguing over time.

The HTR-6060 is a good entry level Yamaha amp. It offers extended frequency ranges of 10 Hz to 100 KHz, so it matches perfectly with the new LPCM surround sound signals. It also has 92Khz/ 24 bit DACs on all channels for a smooth refined sound. Yamahas also beef up their power supplies in order to keep plenty of clean dynamic power available at all times.

You might check with your installer to see what his price is on the HTR-6080. It offers a little bit more power (105 watts X 7 vs. 90 watts X 7), and it also has upscaling to 720p or 1080i through HDMI. The HTR-6060 offers 1080p repeating or deinterlacing of 480i signals to 480p.

It looks like most of the HTR series receivers all use HDMI 1.2 and doesn't support Dolby TrueHD.

Is there a huge difference between Dolby digital and Dolby TrueHD if there is I will call the installer right now and ask if I can change it to a different receiver.

as long as your player can decode, Dolby TrueHD will be supported.

what is your bluray player?

Crackinhedz is correct. Your PS3 will decode the Dolby TrueHD signal and pass that to the Yamaha for amplification. Ditto for uncompressed PCM 7.1 soundtracks. The only thing the PS3 doesn't currently decode is DTS-HD Master Audio, but that is expected in a later firmware upgrade.

You don't need to have the HD decoders in your receiver if the player decodes them. If you feel the need to get the decoders in your receiver, even though the PS3 will not feed them a raw signal to decode, get yourself Yamaha's RX-V1800. It has very similar features and upscaling like the HT-R 6080, but it also comes with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master lossless codecs.

You could do the 661 or 861. The PS3 internally decodes TrueHD and sends it to the receiver as LPCM, so having TrueHD decoding on-board the receiver won't matter anyway since the PS3 can't bitstream lossless audio.

BTW, I've owned a few Yamaha receivers and can vouche for thier quality. You won't be dissapointed.

EDIT--didn't see the above post, but he's saying the same thing. HDMI 1.3 can pass Deep Color (billions of colors) video and I believe is rated for higher bandwidth. Deep Color is not a big deal yet since there is no software that utilizes it, but there may be in the future. BTW, Marantz makes outstanding receivers, as well. They tend to run a little more than some Yamaha models, but they're well worth it. Check out their website.

Yamaha receivers are great, IMO. Very easy to use and puts out a lot of power in their mid to high receivers.

Make sure that the receiver you plan to get has the ability to take 7.1 PCM if not at least having the newer codecs. Some 7.1 receivers can only take up to 5.1 PCM, with matrixed 7.1. On my father's Yamaha (the older V1600), this is the case. It sounds OK, but the rears can be a bit of a problem sometimes. Also, as crackin as well-stressed a lot before, make sure it is NOT HDMI audio passthrough!

So far I have had recievers from Aiwa, Pioneer and Yamaha. Yamaha blew all of them away. The Pioneer I had was even THX certified and sounded horrible. Very sharp and offensive to the ears. But I do highly recommend Yamaha, you wont be dissapointed. I am still waiting for them to release a THX cerftified reciever that decodes all the new codecs.

They have one: the RX-Z11, which retails for about $5 K. Way out of my price range.

The RX-V1800 is about 1/5 the price. No THX certification, but internal decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HDMA and a decent upscaler from every input to 1080p.

In my time I've had three Yamaha receivers and have loved them all. I've been thinking about replacing mine as it is many years old. I've always went to higher-end stores and avoided the Best Buy HTR version Yamaha equipment. Is there a difference between the HTR series and the RX-V besides locations where you can buy it?

I don't think any of the HTR series have onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HDMA. I think the 1800 is the lowest end unit that supports that. I could be wrong.

You can go to Yamaha's website and do an interactive comparison of models. You can select multiple models (I think up to 3) and get a read out of the feature set on each.
