Thumbs up SF Chronicle: HD DVD on verge of extinction

An advice column telling readers to just go with BD. HD DVD fans are already commenting, as you can imagine...

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/articl.../BUSLUPSBV.DTL

Here's the excerpt:

Q: When I went shopping last week for a high-def DVD player, I was tempted to get a Toshiba HD DVD model because the price was so low - $150 versus nearly $400 for the cheapest Blu-ray player. However, the salesman advised me against it, saying that the HD DVD format is in danger of dying, and the Toshiba player can't play Blu-ray discs. Was he correct or just trying to make a higher commission by selling a more expensive device?

A: He was almost certainly correct. Until recently, the battle to set a standard for high-definition movies had no clear winner, with backers of the HD DVD format, led by Toshiba, putting up a good fight against the Blu-ray contingent, fronted by Sony. But in early January, Blu-ray scored a crucial victory when Warner Bros., which had promised to release movies in both formats, announced it was abandoning HD DVD. That gave Blu-ray five of the seven major Hollywood studios (Blu-ray discs have far outsold their HD DVD cousins), so Warner's move is being called the last nail in the HD DVD coffin.

Now the Blu-ray group has mounted a national television and print ad campaign trying for a knockout blow. If you can wait a few months, you'll get a better idea about whether HD DVD has a future. If you want to buy a high-def player in the meantime, I'd go with Blu-ray.

I can understand being disappointed that the basket you put your eggs in had the bottom fall out, I just don't understand how these people are in such denial about it...... I guess it's just being ignorant to the writing on the wall, much in the way that HD DVD supporters were still pushing "backwards compatability" wow.... good selling point there, don't forget your application to MENSA on the way out!

Nice read. I sure wish the war was over already so people wouldn't have to ask that sort of thing tho.

Default interesting read.....

here's an article, I didn't see a date, but it was pre-PS3 launch, so that dates it, everything he says pretty much predicted the outcome.... HD DVD came on strong, but support in the long-run would cause Blu-Ray to win out. He's a modern day Sooth-sayer.

Somebody who knows what they are talking about. Alot of the writers don't do enough research before they put out their stories or they are just biased towards one format or the other (Dud) Keep the good ones coming. As dud continues its slide, my smile gets bigger.

There was never anything unsafe about Blu-ray as the best Blu-ray player is the PlayStation 3 which is equal value as a Games Console and a Blu-Ray player. So the value can never drop. As for Hd DVD if the format fails then the players are worth nothing and you wasted your money.

Superior marketing 'Television & print' over a limited and outdated 30 second commercial.

Nice to hear stories like this. But yet the red team keeps on saying "let the customer decide".

It's like the ship is sinking, massive water coming in and the HD DVD backers are yelling, 'were ok, were ok, come join us and our party.

Their ship sinking and they're saying they're ok is not the big problem, the big problem is there are actually people who'll jump on the sinking ship to join them. All because they say. "Come join us!"

It's so sad.

Red team are dillusional... they think they are the only consumers out there... they don't count us. Consumers are the buyers... and as of now, 85% of consumers are of the Blu pursuasion... but don't tell the red ants that... they won't believe you
