Last night was a wild ride. The wife and kids stayed safely tucked away in our room (since our closet is the "safe room") and I kept an eye on the local news weather reports until around 4:30 am, when the all-clear was given. (They actually managed some sleep... I was not so fortunate.)
Here in TN, 24 people were killed. No less than 2 tornadoes touched down within sight of our home, just south of Nashville. Something like 57 total tornadoes were reported throughout the storm. If you've never seen one of these IRL, it is a totally different experience than the movies. Growing up here, I've seen 'em up close, but there's something sinister about nighttime tornadoes--they're hard to see unless lightning flashes, but they tend to be loud as ****. A quick survey of our home this morning shows no extensive damage... broken gutters, mostly. Lots of debris across our neighborhood, tho. My thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who was adversely affected by last night's storms. Be safe! |

Glad you're ok!
I know how frightening it must've been, as we have them here too. Although no tornadoes have yet hit my neighborhood while I've lived here, I've seen the aftermath of tornadic conditions several times (usually mid-spring). I dread having to get the roof repaired and cleaning up all the fallen trees and limbs. There is a chance that same line of storms will wreak havoc in my area today as we're due east of you. I agree that having these storms at night is even more terrifying because you can't see them coming. Back in '96 (my first summer here) hurricane Fran came through my area and peaked at midnight. There was no where to go, but just wait it out. (Basements are great but I don't have one.) |

No joke! The last few years it seems like "Tornado Alley" has migrated slightly east, with Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky getting a lot of damage.

Just watched the news and saw some of the devastation throughout the south, especially here in TN. Makes you appreciate the wonder of nature, and look forward to Twister on Blu-ray.
Unfortunately the death toll rose to 32 here in TN today. No one we knew was directly affected, although we did learn that a childhood friend of mine was killed in a car accident earlier in the day. |

I live in California so naturally the only thing to fear here is earthquakes which even at my age I will admit they scare the shit out of me. With that being said Ive been to Colorado a lot and the last time I was there I actually saw a tornado touch down about a mile from where I was at my grandparents house. So naturally I was curious and got my camera to take pictures, yeah it wasn't a serious one but the noise thing is true, scared the crap outta me.

I have been through some Hurricanes(florida resident) but dayum!! thats a lot of tornadoes...It sucks to have little or no warning like that I hope the best for all who lost anything.....
note: thinking you can drive through any naturally devestating event, Canes/Nadoes, is not smart. On a 4 lane highway I lost control twice even when driving in the middle the wind will push you off the road I was lucky and vow never to do it again. It jumped several times and eventually came down on Broadway in downtown Nashville, right across the river from where they were building the Titans stadium. There were 8' long pieces of timber from the construction site that were literally embedded into concrete buildings. Also, one of my favorite restaurants collapsed. Later that year, I was in New Orleans for a big music festival when hurricane Georges came rolling through. We had literally just parked our car at City Park when the cops told us to turn around and leave, as they were evacuating the city. We had a long drive back to Gulfport, MS, and I witnessed the hurricane rolling in on us. It was (no lie) just like the scene from Independence Day when the ships are coming into the atmosphere and all those clouds are rolling in as the sky darkens menacingly. We made it back to my girlfriend's home just in time. Her parents thought we were stuck in NO still, and were relieved to see us. We hunkered down and endured the storm, and got to watch a 40' tall tree fly over the house (they had a skylight kitchen) and decimate their above-ground pool in the backyard. I also vaguely recall I kept finding sand in my car for months after that. |
