Original Post:
[Show spoiler]Hi,

Just unfortunately ran into my first faulty disc after having been collecting for just under a year.

Thankfully it was an indicator bluray and the customer service has offered to replace but it does make me wonder as I have quite a large watch pile with a lot of films on there that have been purchased several months ago.

I just wondered how likely it is to get a bad disc, and those with significant watch lists do you ever worry about such an event occurring down the road, say >1 year since the item was purchased?

It takes me about 5 years to go through all my discs, this is due of course to time & the fact that instead of watching an older film, something new has arrived & I watch that.

As of 01.11.22, I completed the last full round of watching & every time I get at least 1 or 2 discs that have collapsed!

This time round it was the following, all USA discs:

Larry Crown - Blu Ray
The Hand - DVD
The Aviator - Blu Ray
Rising Sun - Blu Ray
The Tourist - Blu Ray
Superman 3 - Blu Ray

I have no idea why it happens, films are all stored in an air conditioned room of their own & are not moved about or anything that you would think would cause them to no longer work?

But I guess it is technology that none of us know how long it will live & so issues may arise, no doubt in the original pressing stage? who knows?

Guess it comes with the hobby of collecting an electronic item?

One thing is that the titles are often cheaper, although not always or better editions have come out.

I always check my discs as they arrive, if you can skip through the movie beyond the layer change, it's usually good.

I've only had 1 faulty disc from Europe, being

which was promptly sent back to Amazon for a replacement.

Discs from the US are another story, though

I had to return Schindler's List 4K 25th Anniversary edition as it seemed to be imbalanced. The movie playback was very noisy (disc spinning) upon starting playback, gradually decreasing in loudness as the movie progressed (you could hear it step down as you skipped chapters) and then the noise would pick up again as it neared the end of the film (presumably as it was returning the laser to the troublesome area on the next layer). Hadn't had a problem like that before. I wanted to exchange it for another but Amazon couldn't replace and only offered a refund upon return (which I await still).

There are hundreds of titles from France and Germany potentially affected by BD-rot issues. In France it was mostly because of defective resin (but not only), in Germany they still haven't found the cause.

Do you know which studios/timeframes? I have quite a lot of German releases including some cherished and rare favourites I'd be completely unable to replace.

I've only ever had one actually faulty Bluray - my daughter's copy of the first Despicable Me, which thankfully was one of the easiest ever discs to replace. Not including rot, had only one faulty DVD too - the second Naked Gun film in the 'Nut Case' ZAZ box set HMV used to sell in the late 2000s. But you realise how many discs you have never put into the player and there must surely be some grim surprises waiting for me.

This thread has lots of information on faulty DVDs and Blu Rays. Mainly titles from the US but discs from other regions are included as well, particularly France. It is a very depressing read.

Quick addition here of a few titles I haven't seen mentioned before...these have been unreadable recently when they all worked the last time I watched them.

Crank 2: High Voltage (UK)
Gone Girl (UK)
Transporter 2 (Uncensored, French)
Zack & Miri Make A Porno (UK)

I've also had 2 unreadable copies of Elvis (John Carpenter) (UK). I gave up & replaced it with the US disc.

You should state what your player model is and if its a modded one or not.

Also describe the condition of the disc.
