maybe repost - does the 40GB PS3 upconvert DVDs - Blu-ray Forum

Arguing with a friend about it for the past few weeks - neither of us have the 40GB model. He claims it does NOT upconvert DVDs but I have no seen any 'real' specs ever posted that says it doesn't do upconversion of DVDs. I have to assume it does, just like all the other PS3s.

Somebody tell me the definitive answer!

Yes it does. Ever since firmware ver. 1.80.

Yes it does, I believe it does not support SACD.

I also believe you're right also that the 40GB model doesn't support super-audio CD.

I do believe that in the future even the 40GB PS3 will have software emulation of PS2 titles and will be capable of playing SACD's as well. I'm quite certain that both of those features are firmware upgradeable.

SACD playback is not possible because SACD requires HARDWARE DECRYPTION and RECHECKING.

Are you referring to Pit Signal Processing (watermarking)?

Exactly right. Sony pulled out the hardware necessary to play SACDs in the 40 GB PS3. No firmware update could overcome that. There are indications though that Sony may be working on software emulation for PS2 games for the 40 GB PS3 which could be solved via firmware update(don't expect to see anything like this in the next year).
