Default Should WB Include the Secret Soundtrack with Wizard of Oz?

Warner Brothers, announcing their slate of future releases for 2008 and beyond, have included the title The Wizard of Oz. Should they include, as an option or extra feature, the Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon on the Blu-ray Disc for this title?

Possible Responses:

A Definite Yes, it's a must have feature.
A Tentative Yes, It may increase the sales of the Blu-ray Disc.
A Tentative NO, don't do it. There's no benefit or value added.
A Definite No. That's a stupid idea.

Definite yes . . . I've never played around with this and would love the convenience of not having to start it myself at the correct time, which I don't know what that is. One of the few features I can say I'd definitely take advantage of.

My brief argument in favor of including Dark Side of the Moon:

1. "Dark Side" is one of the best selling rock albums of all time. Didn't it spend something like 25 consecutive years on the Billboard charts? This would allow Warner Brothers to release a proven winner in the market.

2. It would broaden the appeal of the Wizard of Oz. Yes, it's a classic great, but it's appeal is really to the family buyers and pure film collectors. Including Dark Side of the Moon as an option or extra would catch the eyes of the PS3 crowd and some of the older generation who's kids are now grown.

3. It would be an excellent showcase for the possibilities brought about by the extra storage capacity of the Blu-ray disc.

4. A high definition audio format for the Dark Side of the Moon would justify a higher price for the disc, increasing the marginal revenue, and thereby increasing profit (and I assume that you can keep the marginal cost down).

I say hell yes. The only problem is that the pink floyd camp is real tight with there catalog, So I highly doubt it. But for the mean time you can get a dvd off ebay with it syched up already. I think its under the name DARK SIDE OF THE RAINBOW

Bingo!

The only way I see it as a possibility is if Pink Floyd is on the WB record label.

Damn your logic.

Yeah I have always wanted to check this out too. I would be nice if they did, but I don't see it happening.

It's a definite yes. I do, however, already have a DVD copy of 'Dark Side of the Oz', where the audio track is already synched up with it. Then I don't need to coordinate the start times.

Having the same feature on a Blu-Ray would be great. Frankly, I think I only watched the "true" Wizard of Oz once. No more interest after that, except for the Dark Side of the Moon track.

It would save me the trouble of setting it up manually.

If the Wizard of Oz and 2001 had this,.. I may not need the extra CD player in my equipment rack

Yes, there's no doubt that they'd want royalties. And they deserve royalties and should get royalties. But think how well this could potentially sell. We know how well Dark Side sold as a vinyl LP. If you dig the music, you can get it here in a high definition audio format, and with a bonus movie.

If you dig the movie, then you can get it here with a high definition visual format, and with an alternative sound track.

This is what Blu-ray is made for. Right?

It's win / win / win for Warner, for the band, and for their record label.

I don't know how the contracting works when they show it on TV, but a few years ago A&E showed The Wiz and on the SAP setting they had DSOM synced up.

It wouldn't be free to Warner, assuming DSOTM is still on Capitol Records. I don't know what the licensing costs would be, but I doubt they'd be so low that the added expense would not be passed on to the consumer.

(And the 98% comment is hyperbolic. You've made it quite clear you think Warner sucks.)

Interestingly enough, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) did show The Wizard of Oz with The Dark Side of the Moon soundtrack once a few years back (July 3rd, 2000). It can happen, it just depends on how much money Pink Floyd wants for it.

Speaking of Pink, when the hell is Sony going to release The Wall in HD? The DVD with the PCM soundtrack is amazing, but I need HD!

This is something I brought up a while ago that I think would be cool on any BD movie that has an alternate soundtrack.

There are lots of movies that were scored by one composer, only to have it rejected and re-scored by another composer.

Mission: Impossible was originally scored by Alan Silvestri and re-scored by Danny Elfman.

Troy - Gabriel Yared and then James Horner

Alien - Jerry Goldsmith and then mostly replaced by classical music

Legend - Jerry Goldsmith and the replaced by Tangerine Dream

Etc, etc. It would be cool to include the alternate scores on the BD for a different viewing/listening experience.

Lucky for me the gear rack consists of my Receiver, the PS3, and a SACD player so I still am in the pink.

If only Meddle was on SACD for the 2001 thingie. Honestly I bought 2001 on DVD and upgraded it to Blu Ray and I don't think I've ever watched more then the last segment with the Echoes sync. Someday,.. I may watch the actual movie.
