Default Why don't they release new Tv shows on 4K Discs?

Hey all

Can someone please let me know why new TV shows only get released on Blu-Ray rather than 4K?
I would have thought they get filmed on 4K cameras in this day and age?

Like it or not, 4K is still a niche market. Most studios probably don't think it's worth the time or money.

& in the current age of 'Streaming is Everything' we're lucky to get any physical release of a new TV show. Be grateful for a blu-ray.

Westworld, Game of Thrones, Jack Reacher, Jack Ryan, Halo have all gotten 4K releases. There’s a few others I’m forgetting I’m sure.

Because they don't think it'll be profitable.

The hell with shows on 4K, im tired of shows being only released on DVD, or nothing at all. I would love most old and new shows being released on blu-ray.

Only a handful of new US shows on streaming services get filmed and finished in 4K, while pretty much everything else is HD, so there's no real content source to expand the UHD-BD offerings. The only market where a 4K TV production is commonplace is Asia, where 4K broadcast and streaming infrastructure, production, and adoption were far ahead of the US and other markets for some time, pushing them to make a lot of 4K content. Ironically, much of that content doesn't get released on media above DVD and is mostly streamed to viewers, with the occasional Blu-Ray release. Now, they are working on pushing 8K content production and broadcasting.

Most TV series for streaming services seem to be in 4K, actually. Netflix, Apple TV+, Hulu, Disney+, Prime, etc. originals are all in 4K.

Broadcast TV series, however, are not.

The releasing companies are trying to make money. In case you are not aware of the ratio of DVD to BD sales:

Because 90% of them are not worth it purely on Technical grounds!

I have tried very hard to watch MGM+ A SPY AMONG FRIENDS' 1st episode on Amazon Prime.

The show's technical standards are so pathetic and garbage, the digital color grading alone ruined entire cinematography.

Imagine releasing this one or LOTR:TROP on 4K Discs. Do you really see any benefit? barely any.

Compare those two above to BB or LOST or MAD MEN (1st 4 seasons) or SUCCESSION shot of 35mm film, if later 4 are released on 4K disc with a brand new 4K scan, you'll see clearly better picture because on film grain stability aspect alone.

Remember one thing.....the difference between DVD PQ and BD PQ was clearly noticeable and improvement.....the difference between BD PQ and 4K UHD BD PQ was clearly noticeable and improvement......

same cannot be said anymore with assurance between streaming digitally shot, digitally graded 4K uploade streaming files and released 4K Disc media.

Sometimes, you're right in that shows wont benefit much from 4K. It does depend on the show though. Newer, modern sci-fi that had a good budget is worth it. But, I am rewatching the original Twin Peaks TV show and I assure you that it does NOT need the 4K treatment, LOL.

Overall, I am content with having my favorite TV shows on blu-ray if thats whats available. having an option for physical media is key here. Streaming only sucks if you really enjoy a show. I need to own it!

Physical media is a niche market. 4K media is REALLY a niche market. Sad to say, but a lot of folks prefer to stream and binge watch TV.

Not denying it. It is what it is. Like I said, convenience is king. And so is binging. I personally can’t stand binging a show but I’m the outlier. I also cringe at what the average viewer "thinks" is a quality presentation of a film or show. But, it’s all in the eye of the beholder, right?

Still, I maintain that this won’t end well for consumers as the gatekeeping of content gets worse and worse. There are already like 20 streaming services. All the money people "saved by ditching stupid cable or satellite" is no longer such a tangible factor. If ya don’t hold it, ya don’t own it. Period.

Netflix have had a stipulation in place for years that ALL content made for their platform should be shot on and finished in 4K, even the CG. But why does something have to be finished in 4K in order for it to be considered a UHD candidate?
