Jaws' Roy Scheider Dies
Actor who played Chief Brody was 75.

February 10, 2008 - Roy Scheider, best known for playing Chief Brody in Steven Spielberg's Jaws, died Sunday afternoon at the age of 75, reports The New York Times.

According to an article on NYTimes.com, Scheider suffered from multiple myeloma for several years, and died of complications from a staph infection, his wife, Brenda Seimer, said. The actor passed away in Little Rock, AK.

A stage actor who gained big screen success with roles in such classics as Jaws and The French Connection, Scheider's unique, everyman look also brought him leading man status in movies like 2010: The Year We Make Contact and All That Jazz. Scheider teamed up again with Executive Producer Steven Spielberg for NBC's 1993's sci-fi series, SeaQuest DSV, playing the titular futuristic submarine's commander, Captain Bridger.

But most fans (and IGN readers) will best remember Scheider as Amity Island's chief of police, the former NYC cop with a fear of water, who joined Quint and Hooper in an effort to take down movie's most famous great white.

Besides Scheider's wife, The New York Times reports that his survivors include three children, Christian Verrier Scheider and Molly Mae Scheider, with Ms. Seimer, and Maximillia Connelly Lord, from an earlier marriage, to Cynthia Bebout; a brother, Glenn Scheider of Summit, N.J.; and two grandchildren.
