Default It's A Wonderful Knife (2023)

Quote:
Shudder has released the trailer for It's a Wonderful Knife, a slasher reimagining of Frank Capra's Christmas classic It's a Wonderful Life, which fell into the public domain back in 1974. The film will make its world premiere at Beyond Fest on October 8, 2023. It will be released only in theaters across the country on November 10th. It's a Wonderful Knife will stream on Shudder at a later date, presumably in time for the holidays.

Directed by Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls; V/H/S/99), and written by Michael Kennedy (Freaky), the film stars Justin Long (Barbarian), Joel McHale (Community), Jane Widdop (Yellowjackets), scream queen Katharine Isabelle (Josie and the Pussycats) Jess McLeod (One of Us is Lying) and Cassandra Naud (Influencer).

Big fan of Freaky (& the Happy Death Day movies). This looks like it could be a lot of fun.

Quite why they'd mention that pile of **** (& critically reviled boxoffice flop) Black Christmas remake in the same breath as Freaky is beyond me.

It took me half the trailer to realize the Mayor character was Justin Long and not Martin Short.

Looks fun though.

How could you mix them up? They're literally opposites!

This does look fun though

The screenwriter is a creep. He’s 50 and loves sexualizing high school characters in movies. He was obsessed with Wes from Scream 5 so I called him out, we argued on twitter (I posted screenshots), and he blocked me lol. No wonder his movie Freaky had a grown ass 50 year old man kissing a high school aged boy. Write what you know/want they say.

Anyway this will be released with IFC so 500 theatres tops. The trailer barely made any noise on twitter so good luck at the box office.

I don’t know, this doesn’t look all that great to me. And just looking at the cast list on IMDB, almost everyone seems to be from the same bland Canadian casting pool, generically attractive people who all look the same with no diversity. It feels like a cheap Hallmark movie cast to me.

Maybe when I actually see the movie I’ll be proven wrong but my bets are one Thanksgiving as being the most fun of teen slasher we get this fall.

Interesting that they just straight up say that in the promo synopsis. Whole public domain situation with It's A Wonderful Life is a bit odd. Apparently most of it is, but due to the Potterville subplot based on the short story "The Greatest Gift" and/or certain musical rights for songs in the film, it's technically owned by Paramount Pictures.

You can edit out the copyrighted parts and use it like a Public Domain film. That's what RiffTrax did a year or so ago: https://www.rifftrax.com/its-a-wonderful-life

Tragedy Girls director Tyler MacIntyre and Freaky screenwriter Michael Kennedy teamed up for It's a Wonderful Knife, taking the iconic story of George Bailey and giving it a modern spin, while also putting a serial killer at its center. It's a Wonderful Life is already a tragic story at times, but turning it into a slasher is a challenge in and of itself. Ahead of the film's release, ComicBook.com spoke with MacIntyre and Kennedy about how they brought the killer Christmas tale to life.

"I've always wanted to do a Christmas slasher, and so when I just thought about how I would do Freaky and Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life was the first thing that came to my head," Kennedy said

I'm guessing it's better to have seen the original movie first before watching this.

It’s better to watch the original and the pretend this doesn’t exist.

Was going to see this last night but I've maxed out my Regal Unlimited reservations and didn't want to boot one and pay the fees again.

Interested to hear some reviews if anyone saw.

How was it?

Reactions have been split down the middle.

My local theater also got this. I'm thinking of doing a double feature with Thanksgiving this weekend.

I originally thought
[Show spoiler]the film only took the name from Capra's movie but they took the whole plot.
The film has nice pacing and around 14 kills in it's 90 minute runtime. The actors seemed to have a good time making the film so if you can put the ridiculousness out of your head you should find it entertaining. It was good to see Katharine Isabelle in a supporting role. This had very little advertising. I never saw the trailer and it opened on a small screen at the 18 plex. Only one other person showed up and he arrived about 5 minutes after the film started. Slasher fans should definitely check it out.
