Default Close Caption through PS3 w HDMI

Is it possible to display close caption from a DVD played through PS3 with HDMI ? Some titles I have, e.g. South Park, a few BBC titles, don't have subtitles but only CC.

It sucked for me when i brought ps3 home after target finding out that CC will not work on SDVD! I was so mad , cursing at ps3 and it was before I started buying blu ray.

I think you are right. Seems like CC can only be displayed through 480i & analog outputs.

My DVD player won't display CC as soon as I set it to progressive.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the traditional line 21 CC system incompatible with HDMI as line 21 is an analog system and HDMI is purely digital?

Apparently HDMI is not able to carry an overlaying signal over video and audio according to an engineer I had an conversation with the other day.

Question

Sorry to resurrect this ancient thread, but as a new user, I am unable to create a new thread, and no one seems to have answered my question elsewhere. Namely:

Is there any Blu-Ray player out there that will decode NTSC closed captioning on DVDs and overlay that information on the video so that it can be viewed when connected to a display over HDMI?

Default Closed captioning should be mandatory for ALL players!

It is also important to note, that subtitles and closed caption are two different things. Subtitles only convey what is voiced by the actors nothing else. Closed captioning relates everything happening on the screen. One example is a musical where the songs which are integral to the plot of the story, they are not subtitled. There are other examples as well. The point is subtitles do not tell the whole story. And yes NOT all movies are subtitled!
I love blurays and the quality is great. However, Bluray player do NOT support Closed Captioning. Which makes it impossible for everyone to enjoy movies. When blurays came out this was a HUGE oversight. It should be mandated that ALL Bluray players including PS3 be able to support Closed Captioning! Figure out a way!

The earlier Blu-Ray titles from Sony and Fox actually DO have standard closed captions, though your TV can only decode them if your player is hooked up through analog (if it even HAS analog outputs!) and set to 480i. My computer Blu-Ray playback program can also display them. I agree that Blu-Ray players should include decoders for standard closed-captions, as there are hundreds of DVDs that include them (and don't even include corresponding player-generated subtitles) and most current players only have HDMI outputs now.

Agreed, but if the content you're putting into the PS3 doesn't support close captioning, then it means nothing anyways. I tried a Blu-ray without subtitles last week and didn't get any closed captioning. I'm no expert, so maybe anything would if you watched it without HDMI, but then that defeats one of the major reasons of watching a Blu-ray.
