Are any external Blu-ray drives actually shipping?

Hello all,

Just a question for all you in the know about this. Despite my attempts, any searches turned up nothing but vaporhardware for the samsung external, the benq one or the lacie d2 one listed here.

Are any external firewire or usb drives actually shipping at all anywhere from any retailer online? If so, what and where?

If not, when will that happen, and one more question to top it off: Would it work if I bought an internal sony IDE blu-ray drive (one of the only ones I can locate that is shipping) and placed it in one of those external USB 2 ide cases meant for hard drives or dvd burners?

I just have a need for archiving alot of data reliably on a number of machines (including laptops) and would like to use the external blu-ray drive for that.

Have you tried to get external burner from the creator of the drive? Try using the support feature on their web sites if they do not have online store...

This should work with no problems. 100%. Those drives are no different than a standard DVD burner after all. The connectors are exactly the same

Try it, then please give feedback about how the drive performers!

I have seen external drives in Japan, so it should be doable.

Putting one in an external case should work ok - make sure the case supports 'CDROMs' since some chipsets do not (though all of the 'half height' standard sized ones should).
