Default External hard drives on PS3?

New to the whole computer thing, and I know that you can put a new hard drive in your PS3. I have a 60GB PS3 and have seen external hard drives for sale that "are made specifically for the PS3", but will ANY external HDD work on the PS3 and if so, do they work well? Forgive my ignorance on this topic as my knowledge of computers is limited to the internet and just basic stuff. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks!

what he means to say is it has to be 2.5" and fat32. but if i'm not mistaken, aren't most external hd's fat32 anyway?

If you have an INTERNAL 2.5" disc, you need to make sure it is formatted to the format spec "fat32".
If you have en external disc, well I do not know if it needs to be a fat32 disc, but you can not install the OS on it. However you can use it as long as it is USB. I have hooked up many drives to my PS3 (including an ipod) and they all work.
If you want to hook up a USB drive, you can use it to store movies, music, pictures, I am not sure about games but probably.

Like I said, I'm a newbie. That sounds like a good route for me to go, but what kind of cost am I looking at? Also, how do you format it? Do you put the software in the PS3 or your PC? Sorry I'm such a dork about this...

Plug in the HD then go to start and left click on the drive choose format and it will take care of the rest depending on the size of the drive you may have to create partitions though

So, I take it, it would be relatively easy for a newbie like me?

Also, could I put files from my computer (i.e. - music, videos, etc.) and access and watch them thru the PS3?
