Default Charmed (1998-2006)

There seems to be an uptick in YouTube reactors watching Buffy and Charmed lately. I've been watching some and it's interesting seeing the show through their eyes.

Back in the day my city didn't get The WB until Charmed's third season was about to start, if I remember correctly. I was a big Shannen Doherty fan so I was excited. I bought homemade VHS tapes of the first 2 seasons off of ebay and binged it. I was obsessed. Then the ending of Season 3 happened. Season 4 started and I was confused and pissed. I didn't know about the backstage drama. I also had joined Television Without Pity at that time and it got me through the show and was fun as well.

For me Seasons 1-3 were my favorite. 4 had some great episodes and I liked Paige/Rose. 5 is where it started to get crappy. 6 had some pretty good episodes. 7 was ok and 8 was awful.

My biggest issues were the writing and showrunner Brad Kern. Making Holly and Alyssa producers. I hated the Phoebe character with a passion. She went downhill when they introduced Cole.

The last season should've been about the sisters, but they introduced Billie and it was just bad.

I haven't bothered with the Season 9 & 10 comics.

What are your thoughts?

If you want to listen to some funny Charmed podcasts on YT, check out Allison Pregler's "Charmed is a Mess" and now her "Charmed Rewinds".
And of course, Holly, Drew and Brian have the "House of Halliwell" podcast. The new ones that had Shannen were good and it's sad that we won't get to have more with her.

I like seasons 1-3 even though it became apparent in the third season that they were trying to be like Buffy. Season 4 is also okay though this is the season where Phoebe became insufferable.

Season 5 is where they completely changed the tone of the series and basically became a different show. I haven't watched those seasons since they aired but I bought the complete series on Blu-ray recently so I plan to rewatch them eventually.

I believe they did it for two reasons:
1. Giving the three main girls more free time. They tried to do that with replacing them with other actresses playing them because of the spell they did in the previous season. However, the network didn't like it at all so instead they introduced a new witch who would take more screen time from the sisters.
2. They were probably hoping for a spinoff the next year.

I feel like after Season 4, the feeling of the sisterly bond was gone. It was every sister for themselves. Adding the stupid magical creatures changed it too. Season 7 was supposed to be the end, but The WB changed their mind. Although I don't think that ending was very satisfying either.

I remember being a part of an online group that was obsessed (I wasn't) with trying to get a Charmed Brothers spin-off with Chris & Wyatt. Billie wasn't introduced very good and her character was rushed. They even had her finally finding Christy, what should've been a huge moment, offscreen. Coop was insufferable. Sigh...

And yet I still have fondness for the show.

I didn't think the final season was so bad, better than the stupid make them look like other people ending from the previous season... like, so you gave your kids to their grandfather to go live like younger people? No.

It's funny that Chris and Wyatt could now have their own show and they'd be around the age in real life that the flashforward would put them.

I was a huge Buffy, Angel and Charmed fan and have watched each series through several times but now that I am almost 50 they just aren't the same. The problems stick out more, whenever Cole is on screen I want a meteor to hit the Earth and end my suffering.

Now when I want to watch something like these shows I will put on Fringe, Grimm and Haven. Plus, I also have the complete series of Warehouse 13, Eureka, 12 Monkeys and Continuum.
