The Challenge
Watch films noir to attain the following levels based on common film noir characters:

5 films: Unsuspecting Dope or fall guy

District Attorney Challenge (Optional)
The set-up: you’re the Big City DA

[Show spoiler]

with political ambitions and an eye on the Governor’s mansion, but you’re behind in the polls. You need a conviction against Mr. Big

[Show spoiler]

and his crime syndicate to turn your campaign around. To get the conviction you’ll need to watch 10 films noir from the 1940s and 10 from the 1950s. Because you’re a savvy DA, you’ve successfully argued for the judge to grant an exception: you may replace any film one-for-one with a neo-noir title; build a case with these 20 films and you’ll get your conviction.

The Films
Every time you watch a film, post your rating and thoughts on the film and be sure to use spoiler tags when appropriate. Hopefully everyone can discover a new dark alley to wander down or an irresistible femme fatale that just blew into town.

No Man of Her Own ⭐⭐⭐⭐

From Eddie Muller's book, Dark City: "...(Paramount, 1950) may be the ultimate 'woman's noir.' Mitchell Leisen, a wizard at 'weepies,' directed this adaptation of Cornell Woolrich's I Married a Dead Man, fashioning a combination tearjerker and backstabber. A pregnant woman is dumped by her cad boyfriend and tearfully heads cross-country, seeking a fresh start. She's befriended on the train by a pregnant newlywed, traveling with her husband. The train crashes and Helen, through a wild fluke (Woolrich's hallmark), is mistaken for the other woman and eventually accepted into her 'late husband's' affluent family. Needless to say, the cad comes out of the past, thretening Helen's newfound happiness."

⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2

Top-notch noir that should be much better known than it is. Van Heflin stars as Frank Enley, a contractor and civic leader, contentedly living with his wife (Janet Leigh) and child in a Southern California suburb. Into this sunny picture stalks Robert Ryan as Joe Parkson; limping, lumbering, packing heat, and bringing dark secrets from the past with him.

Featuring tight direction, terrific cinematography by Robert Surtees, and excellent performances from the entire cast, including Mary Astor as an aging barfly/hooker encountered by Van Heflin during his descent into a world of shadows, danger, and noir.

Seems like I'm always toeing the line about this, but I just plucked this off the shelf for tonight's viewing, and I gotta ask: would Bringing Out the Dead be considered a neo-noir? Seen one or two webpages listing it as one, and I think the vibes are definitely there with the voice-over and style. Whatya think, chief?
