Default Blu-ray player sales up seven-fold at Play.com (UK)

Quote:
Play.com big-boss-man tells T3 that new Blu-ray punters have sky-rocketed, since the end of the format war.

Those cagey folk who refused to hedge their bets in Hi-Def Match showdown sure didn't waste much time once Toshiba closed the door on HD-DVD, this week.

Play's Stuart Rowe informs us that on VHD (Victory in Hi-Def) Day this Tuesday, the company sold more Blu-ray players than in the previous week combined.

"There was a seven fold increase in Blu-ray player sales, on that day alone." said the Chief Operating Officer.

"People have been waiting a long time to move into the Hi-Def era and now they have the confidence that this is going to be the format.

"Our cheapest player (The Samsung BD-P1400/XEU) is now £199 and you'd expect the prices to come down further as Sony try and build the brand. It's all great news for the consumer."

This is what I like reading. The interest in Blu-ray is going to increase expeonentially and the competition from the CE manufacturers will get heated. All gloves are off now.

Exactly. Its amazing how many people were simply sitting on the sideline waiting for a victor. Its like watching a Bowl game and waiting for the seconds to tick off before storming the field

I can't even count the number of folks I know who have--in the past couple of weeks/days--told me that they will soon, or eventually, be buying Blu-ray players and Blu-ray disks.

There were certainly a lot of people out there just waiting for someone to officially tell them that it was *now* OK to make the leap.

(Fears of another VHS vs Betamax bloodbath must have become deeply ingrained into the national consciousness, and they didn't want to be on the wrong side.)

Awesome news. I wonder what the total is for them and if it includes the PS3.

This is just the evidence that I've been looking for to counter the arguments of those that (used to) favour a dual format future, where competition between the formats was suppose to improve quality and value for the consumer. There will still be competition, just more of it, now.

This will be the news everywhere. I can't wait to see the numbers after this holiday season.

wow... £199 is cheap. when sony SA reached that price, I am considering retiring my PS3 as BD player and replaced it with SA. PS3 would be for games

Hard to fathom isn't it. The minute you remove the confusion people actually start to buy into HDM! Crazy world..who woulda thunk such a thing could happen?
