Default I don't even understand why anyone would buy a 2.0 player

I don’t even understand why people would buy 2.0 Blu-ray players. I mean really, why bother? A PS3 is can cost around 400 dollars or whatever and can get all the updates any, and I mean ANY blu-ray player can receive in the future, am I right? If so…Why? I mean really there has to be some catch to this, if there’s not then it’d be only logical to buy a PS3 instead of the aforementioned 2.0 blu-ray players

Some people prefer stand alone players.

Also, PS3 is bluetooth. There is an IR work around but your average consumer isn't going to go through the hassle. So, if they want to use an IR universal remote they'll go for a stand alone.

PS3 cannot give you lossless audio from DTS HD MA, and cannot bitstream DTS HD MA or TrueHD. If it could decode and bitstream both of those, and if it also had analogue audio outputs, then there would be a lot less of a market for standalone players.

Okay thanks, i was just told that it could also get an update where the PS3 could get the DTS HD MA thing, anyway alright then.

And..compared to Standalone, the PS3 is a dustbuster noise wise.. Might not be at the 1xFan speed but here it kicked pretty fast to 2nd and at my friends house at 3xgear..

Getting a firmware upgrade for DTS HD MA in the future is a future wish list item.

Its not set in stone.

I thought it was confirmed that the PS3 must wait for another competing model to become available with said capability before it can be enabled according to some such agreement with other blu-ray player producers. That is why we had to wait for 1.1 capability and trueHD decoding.

It's supposed to be coming we just don't know for sure yet.

I think a large part of it is that some just have a thing about it being a gaming-console. High-quality and gaming console usually don't go hand-in-hand so I think that deters some. I think the PS3 basically caught everyone by surprise in that regard and even with the glowing reviews, some still seem skeptical. Still, like some mentioned, it's somewhat non-standard. It has to be at the top of the stack or on it's own shelf due to it's shape and that could be problematic. It probably needs better airflow (more open space) than a standalone. The bluetooth causes issues for people that want to use a universal to control it. It doesn't have as many analog outs so it's not as flexible with audio as some of the standalones. While both of mine are very quiet, some here say that their PS3s are noisy and that could be an issue for some (it would be for me if mine were that way). It has a lot of advantages as well but some of the non-standard items probably cause some to balk at it as their main player.

even with the update it will be internally decoded and some people prefer to have it decoded by their receivers.

Don't get me wrong, the PS3 is a great player, but it's not the best player that there will ever be, and based on your needs, it may not be the best player for everyone right now.

Honestly, I think some people fuss a tad too much over the remote controls. It's certainly not an issue for me.

Another thing about PS3, it can load Blu-ray discs much faster than any other standalone players out there. Much faster.

I'm getting a 2.0 standalone for my bedroom. as when I placed a PS3 in there is it too loud for late night watching.

The PS3 is great in the living room, as there is adequate ventilation and space between me and the console.

The ability to bitstream or decode audio will be nice as well.

yeah but the ps3 not being able to decode and bitstream shouldnt be a huge problem if you have a receiver that can do it for you so sq shouldnt be a factor

In my case it is all about my wife. I wouldn't have been able to get a new XBR 4 and onkyo receiver if my wife didn't have a simple way to control everything. So I went with the harmony 890. Therefore she had a huge issue with getting a ps3 when she found out it wasn't compatible with IR. She didn't see the point in spending almost 300 bucks on a universal remote and then have it not be able to control everything.

While she loves the picture quality of bd and likes the ps3 photo and video storage capablities, She still has no idea how to use it. I agree, for my own use the inability for a unverisal remote to control the ps3 isn't a big deal. However new and inexperienced electronic users may have a different view.

it's interesting how wives are.....my wife is the opposite.....she can't stand universal remotes because she has no clue what button to push to make things work.....she much prefers to use the dedicated remote that came with the equipment......my universal is collecting dust.

Even if the PS3 can bitstream all formats now, there will be folks who would opt for standalone players. I am one of those. To each his own I guess.
