My setup now has BD via HDMI to TV and DVD and Cable via Component to TV. When I get a new receiver, I will hook up the BD and DVD via HDMI to the receiver. Probably stick with Component for Cable. My question is should the Component be hooked up via the Receiver or directly to the TV like I have it now? What are the advantages (if any) to connecting through the receiver instead of directly to the TV? Thanx.

Also should have asked in my last post but...If the receiver can handle it would it be best to go HDMI to Receiver from all components including DVD and Cable? Sure would eliminate a lot of cables. Any other downsides besides having to fiddle with TV adjustments for all components separately since they will all be input to the TV via one HDMI out from the Receiver? Thanx.

i would connect the cable with hdmi to the receiver, the advantage is less steps to do things, if you connect everything to the rec and then one cable to your tv from the rec then you can leave the tv on that input and the receiver will switch the video and the sound at the same time. so if you wanted to watch cable you would just turn on you tv, receiver and cable box, then press tv on the receiver and you would have the sound and video all switched together. to watch a dvd then you would just press dvd on the rec and you would have the video on the tv and surround sound
another advantage if you have a receiver the upconverts to hdmi you would only have one cable going to your tv from any input on the receiver. the receiver is designed to be the hub of you home theater everything connects to the receiver then the receiver connects to the tv but it really is all a matter of preference Last edited by guitarist155; 02-27-2008 at 06:49 PM. |

Yes it makes the hook-up easier, but you have to also look into what kind of Video Processor the receiver has. Faroudja is a good name to look for. Alot of receivers offer HDMI switching, but they are all not created equal.

me personally, would run cable tv with Component directly to the TV.
Less distance. Reason I wouldnt use HDMI is the cable is 1080i max and no lossless audio so no real need for hdmi. Plus, if you connect everything HDMI through the Receiver then you have to share picture settings with each device (brightness, contrast, color, sharpness etc)....which sux. Cable via component and Bluray/DVD hdmi, you dont have to share as much. That way you can optimize the picture quality better. |
