Default is blu-ray really needed for every movie?

I'm seeing a lot of threads on here of people begging for blu-ray on movies that have nothing but people talking. What's the point? Isn't dvd just fine for that?

Let's reserve our market-driving consumer demand for movies that actually have something to look at.

First off, I'm a FIRM believer that it doesn't have to be an action film with lots of explosions to justify a Blu-ray release. I think ALL films benefit from enhanced audio and video.

Secondly, I will NEVER trust popular demand when it comes to movies/television/music. I live in a country that makes American Idol the no.1 show, allowed Epic Movie and Kangaroo Jack to be no.1 at the box office and...I really can't say anything about music because it's so damn terrible...all of it.

Put it this way, would you rather watch people talking through the eyes of fly or through the eyes of a person with 20/20 vision? It doesn't matter if there aren't any special effects a better view is still better.

Now if a person can't afford blu-rays all the time, then he and he alone should make the value judgement of buying a movie in blu-ray or dvd.

But companies should still make it available in HD for those who can afford.

No. DVD is nice, but after you watch HD for a while you get accustomed to it. So when you go back to DVD, its like removing your glasses making your 20/20 vision return to the lousy 20/40 vision. I'd rather pay more to watch a beautiful looking movie, than pay dirt for the same movie, but lousy quality.

If I were in charge of Toshiba and Sony, I would put all the B movies on HD DVD and the great movies on blu-ray

Simple answer is yes, all movies deserve a blu-ray release. I have vowed and everyone in my house has as well to never buy another dvd again. I just cannot go back to dvds with the crappy picture and audio. I am spoiled with having pristine 1080p picture and lossless audio. Seeing what they have done to classics like Close Encounters, I don't see why any movie cannot be released in blu-ray. I would buy more classics and more blu-ray but my paycheck cannot keep up, so studios please release them and I will get them soon enough!

And the hi-def combination players would be much cheaper so that everyone could afford it.

What's HD-DVD?

Anyway - don't think everything needs to be in Blu...as far as older releases go. Take the Twilight Zone Movie for example...it didn't gain any benefit from being put into 1080p. I'd say the same about The Fly and Die Hard II. They just don't look any better than a good old DVD.

As far as newer movie - put them all on Blu. I agree w/ comments that you can't beat the high detail, even on a chick-flick like No Reservations. If you just stay w/ blockbuster action movies you'll get POTC:3 all the time - which may look and sound great - but is still an awful, awful, awful movie.

I was playing with my AVR settings and had '3:10 to Yuma' loaded in the player. My wife walked by as the opening stagecoach scene was being played out. She stopped -- mesmerized by the picture and said "Wow. That really is impressive."

That speaks volumes to me.

I'd invite you to view the BLU for the original Halloween movie that was made in 1978.

Just a wee bit of a difference.

I've watched several movies on Blu-Ray lately that really had no business being released on Blu-Ray in the first place. The original Rocky for example. It didn't look any better than the last release on standard DVD.

There's only so much you can do with older movies. Why would you want to buy a grainy movie on Blu-Ray when you can buy the same grainy movie on standard DVD for 1/2 (or even 1/3) of the price?

B movies like Evil Dead or Army of Darkness should only be on HD DUD. I almost forgot, those wannabe spoof movies like Date Movie and Epic Movie should be on HD DUD as well

ill still rent dvd, but i will only buy blu from here on out, and i don't care if its action packed or just a simple comedy it looks better in hidef. now if the transfers bad thats a whole other monster. i only buy the movies i really like though, ones i can watch multiple times. and i want the choice of hidef on the movies i like, not just the ones the general public decides are good.

+1 to the epic movie kangaroo jack american idol post.....i feel your pain

Some of those old movies look good on blu-ray. Robocop: The Unrated version looks pretty good for blu-ray.

You can feel free to gtfo at any time I would think.
Evil Dead 2 looks great on blu, and I look forward to Army of Darkness once Universal wakes up.
Spoof movies can also benefit.
Maybe I should say "hd dud" a few times to sound cool on here too?

There is actually more than 'only so much' that a studio can do. Studios can take the time and make a nice, clean transfer, or they could do some restoration work. It's not simply because older movies are worse.

Watch The Searchers for the best example of this. Warner took their time and did an amazing restoration.

I could not have put it more simply. All movies should go Blu. If you can have better picture, audio etc.... why not?

Yeah. Also, you should talk a lot about how horrible Toshiba is and make fun of HD-DVD owners as if their choice somehow makes them intellectually inferior in some way.
