[Blank]x Speed? - Blu-ray Forum

I've been looking around for information on this for a while, what exactly is the multiplier that is used to enumerate the disc read speed? Is it based on how fast all the data on a single layer can be read in 'x' ammount of time? A 2x Blu-Ray is much faster than a 2x DVD correct?

Ah ok... so is it just an arbitrary value set in the Blu-Ray specification?

No. Not arbitrary - actual!
A BD @ 1x is actually reading 3 times the bits per second than a DVD @ 1x.
Since BD-ROM is speced out at 1.5x it is reading at 5 times the rate as a DVD @ 1x.

Well what I meant for arbitrary was they just picked a number to be the "standard" read speed, and all drives must be rated to read at a certain multiplier of this? It's all about what speed the disc is spinning, correct?

Well, yeah.
Don't have the RPMs of the discs... but since Blu-ray has a tighter beam and writes/reads smaller pits on the disc... more pits(bits)can be written/read at the same given time frame/speed.

This is why we have the same disc size and 25-50GB.
My drive on this laptop doesn't scream with Blu-ray Discs... but a CD (24x) or DVD(8x)... it does start humming.

1x BD vs 1x DVD... BD wins!
1x BD vs 8x DVD... DVD wins!
