Default Would you like a DVD bundled with your Blu-ray?

I have an idea that Blu-ray might be even more popular if it came with a basic DVD version that you can use on all of your exisiting DVD players. I would appreciate it if you would take a second to respond in the poll and let me know your thought.

I am thinking that to keep the cost down and to deter people from reselling the DVD on Ebay that it would be a basic DVD with limited artwork on the disc, and no extra features, but the encoded video would be the same as the full release version of the same DVD.

No guarantees of this happening, but it might make more sense than the current stories in the press claiming that BD has "beat" DVD. I think they both have their place, even under the same roof.

Absolutely not. I would not want a standard DVD, and I do not think people would want to pay more for it. Not too mention, that was one of the MAJOR downfalls of HD DVD. The combo disc. Now I know you didnt mention a "combo," but the idea of a DVD with it is just stupid.

Sure ... as long as it doesnt cost me more. A DVD costs what .09 to make now. I would use it for the kids and to take in the car.

Wouldn't pay any more for it, but wouldn't be terrible to be able to take places that don't have blu-ray players

I want to be able to take my BLU-RAY's with me everywhere , hint's the in-dash for the car , a portable flip up screen for anywhere really. Thats why I picked the Blu-only option up top, but hey a free DVD theres nothing wrong with that except it will put the brakes on having everything BLU.

Alot of people will make all kinds of excuses for this not to work because they are locked in the "blu vs the world" mentality but if this can be done with little extra cost it is win/win.
It is NOT a combo, it does not hurt content on the blu and it gives the customer the idea that they are getting even more value.
"Hey I can buy the dvd for 15 or I can get the dvd and blu for 20!"

Having a DVD will only increase the costs. Anyways, I only want to view my Films in Blu!

Yes, but only if it doesn't cost more. I'm actually fine with just a blu-ray but I'm passing along what some of my friends with kids have said. They'd like a DVD to be included so they could use it in their minivan. Most don't allow their kids to have DVD players, VCRs, etc. in their rooms yet so trips are the biggest concern so far. They're already balking at the blu-ray prices somewhat so that's why I mentioned it needing to cost the same. Don't think they'd go for any increases.

Yeah, but wouldn't giving the unused DVD to a friend ultimately cost the studio and/or the BD buyer more?

My observation was that the HD-DVD combos failed because they had playability problems and cost substantially more. If you could get the DVD version for an extra $2.50, it might make customers happier to transistion to Blu-ray since all of their DVD players will still be able to play the same title, or so my theory goes...

The 80mm DVD's would be more expensive to make since they are out of the ordinary. They also are too severly capacity restricted.

It would be good if you did it as a Special Edition of the movie. So:

Release 1: Bare bones DVD fr sale
Release 2: Blu-Ray edition with ALL the extras + bonus DVD Disc that plays in DVD players (low bitrate encoded dvd5 to not encourage reselling).

Thats a decent idea as long as its NOT a permanent solution. It should be used to transition people into Blu-Ray and then drop it once the format is doing much higher sales volume.

I guess I'm the only one who would pay for it (so far). As long as not ALL blu rays come with the DVD I think it is a good idea. (Not sure how that would work though) As someone who has young kids, my portable DVD player is priceless.

Edit: agree with blitz6speed

To add to my previous post also, I like I am sure most people here have friends that are in no position to go blu for a while and I do like to go hang out and watch movies there too ( even though the tv is half the size of mine ).
It does get irritating when they are like "have you seen *" and I am like yeah I just bought it.
And then when they ask to bring it over, no go.
There are just alot of variables.

Would you offer the blu-ray with and without DVDs so that people that don't have a need for the DVD wouldn't have to pay the extra $2.50?

No, especially because it would ruin the case art. Just look at Fox and the digital copy banner.

Exactly. Case art is one of the biggest things to me. I dont know why, but seeing an ugly banner like that (as in Live Free or Die Hard) I would be disgusted.

I don't see how the combo format could possibly have been part of HD-DVD's downfall. In fact, my only complaint about Blu-Ray thus far has been that I've wanted to lend a few of the films to my parents but they don't have a BD player yet. Yeah, I could have them over and show off the format. But...you haven't met my mom.
