Default question about OAR kinda

i have a few dvd's that look like this and i can't figure out whats going on, for example....

im watching "gross point blank" dvd, it says it is 1.85:1 which i would expect to fill the screen, but instead it still has black bars on the top and the bottom and looks distorted (squashed vertically and looks stretched/wide) on "full" picture mode on my tv. when i set my tv to the "normal" wide mode like i do for normal 4:3, the image is a small square surrounded on all 4 sides by black bars...but no longer looks distorted. i then have a "widescreen zoom" .... and a "zoom" function and neither look right!
just reg "zoom" gets rid of all black bars but still looks semi squashed stretched or distorted in some fashion. so the only mode that seems to be not distorted is the one with 4 black bars surrounding the picture.

It's probably an older widescreen DVD, before they were made anamorphic for widescreen TV's...like a widescreen format for a fullscreen TV, because that was the norm at the time. Maybe someone can explain better. Where's Deci?

Yes, if it looks normal in 4:3 mode it is a non anamorphic release.

And his name is Deci, as in Deciazulado

Edited, thanks HDJK. Anyhoo, he seems to know everything in the world about aspect ratios...haven't seen him in a while though.
