Default Toshiba being investigated about HD DVD

Quote:
"Girard Gibbs is currently conducting an investigation on behalf of consumers who purchased Toshiba HD DVD players.

On February 19, 2008 Toshiba announced that it would no longer support the HD DVD format. Up to the announcement, Toshiba continued to market HD DVD players to potential customers. Consumers complain that they have invested hundreds of dollars in a technology that has become obsolete in less than two years. If you purchased an HD DVD player and would like to learn more about our investigation, please fill out the form below.

Girard Gibbs, a national litigation firm specializing in consumer class actions, securities and complex business litigation, has recovered billions of dollars on behalf of its clients. Girard Gibbs’s managing partner Daniel Girard was recently voted one of Northern California’s Super Lawyers by Law & Politics Magazine, recognizing him as one of the top 5-percent of attorneys practicing in Northern California."

I don't agree with this either, but I also don't feel sorry for Toshiba.

His firm will gladly go after Toshiba for screwing the "little guy". And when the multi-million $ suit is settled, everyone will make $20 or $30fter his cut.

People are so ridiculous these days, I certainly don't feel bad for Toshiba, but this type of crap is ridiculous.

Except the lawyers.

That's how these class-action-lawsuit scams work. They round up a ton of people, get a bunch of them to testify they were harmed, get the company to fork over $50 million or whatever, the lawyers take their third and get even richer, and the alleged victims each get checks for $20.

Or less. I got a check for like $1.37 a few years ago as part of my settlement in a class action lawsuit that I didn't even know I was part of. The only thing I can think of is I had ordered a computer from Dell and perhaps they had gotten a list of all customers from them. This was the lawsuit over selling monitors labeled by the CRT size, not the amount that was actually visible.

I hadn't felt victimized to start with, and the money was chump change, but you can bet some lawyers made out big time.

Once again HD-DVD owners suck.

First they buy this tech and then laugh at BD users saying how we were going to lose. Laugh at us when paramount switched. Went cocky into CES.

Then blamed Toshiba/society when their format went kaputz. And now suing.

It is like suing the losing politcian whom they have voted for.

These people have problems.

This thread title is misleading. Public law firms don't "investigate"--that's a very official word typically reserved for law enforcement and government. Law firms "inquire", which is pretty much all they CAN do.

But don't mistake this as being a bunch of sour grapes HD DVD owners trying to make a buck. As others have pointed out, this is a law firm trying to rile up the public in hopes of cashing in on Toshiba's dead format. It likely won't go anywhere, since Class Action's have to be approved the courts, and Toshiba will no doubt nip this in the bud before it goes pending.

I still call bullshit on this lawsuit and say it's an indictment of our society as a whole. Everyone is looking to sue somebody. Everyone is looking for a dark corporate conspiacy against the little guy. Bullshit.

Toshiba is a business. Their sole purpose in life is to make money and return profits to their investors. They co-developed a product called HD-DVD in order to make even more money. The product became unprofitable and they stopped development. In the business world it's known as ignoring sunk cost. In layman terms its called cutting your losses.

If Blu-ray had lost the "war" I wouldn't be filing lawsuits. Nobody coerced me into buying the damn thing.

I used the word "investigate" because that is what the article said. It doesn't say a lawsuit has been filed yet.

Firms like this look for any opportunity to sue anyone.

Any court will find the plaintiffs, had they done any basic research would know the risk they were taking, and tell them to go suck a lemon, especially since the decks still work as advertised

That is why nowadays you need to do extensive research before investing in anything. Why would you blow your money on something without even knowing what you're getting into? Most of us did our research, thus we didn't get screwed.
