Question Digital Audio Problems on a Sony 301

Just purchased a Sony 301 from Sam's and overall I love it. However, no matter if we pop in a plain DVD or a Blu-ray DVD, when set to Dolby Digital all the voices drop out or become very muffled - background and audio tracks remain fine. I have the player connected to my Kenwood A/V receiver via digital coax. I have tried various settings, but to no avail - I always have to set it to downmix, which works, but not as well as full digital. Any ideas?

Try changing the cable.
You can also try the toslink connection to rule out the player.

your settings should be:

Dolby Digital = Dolby Digital
Dts = Dts

if you have it set like this and movie dialogue is still missing, then perhaps your center speaker is not wired correctly?

Yes, I second checking your center speaker wiring. If you do not have a center speaker go into the settings of your receiver and make sure it is set for "no" center speaker. It would then route voices to your left and right mains.
