Yeah, and I'm kicking myself because I bought both Stargate and Total Recall not 1 month ago.

If so, Lionsgate should exchange them all for free, especially Stargate because the forced subs for the aliens are screwed up. Unfortunately there's no way to get in touch with them because they closed down their customer support email.

Yeah, I have had Stargate for over a month now.

I can't believe they're already starting the double dipping THIS fast.

Heh, I guess BD really is about to win out pretty soon, if this is any kind of indicator.

There absolutely should be some generous upgrade programs in place for people who bought the first run discs and want to get these newer ones.

These are most likely just different covers for the Canadian releases (it does happen). You will notice that the original releases don't include both English and French as is required for Candian releases. This will most likely be the only differences.

Yes, I totally agree.

update: Well I found them on the futureshop website too (another Canadian store) and they show up as January 2 releases. All Lions Gate titles have diferent catalog numbers there, so that didn't help to tell them apart. So you're probably right, they probably are the same editions. The description didn't say anything about any French tracks or subtitles tho.

Previously on Twin Peaks:

What about the HD AUDIO in the T2 cover? The 5.1 DTS-ES 1.5 Mbps track on the "Terminator 2 - Judgement Day" disc I have is not the same as the 6.1 DTS-HD 3 Mbps tracks found on the later Lions Gate releases. (It also has a "different" title, which tends to be more associated with the extended cut video versions.. )

The release date of January 9 coincides with the second day at CES. Maybe it'll be part of the Lions Gate announcement... We'll see what happens..
on Judgement Day

If it were true, double dipping is bad, but at the same time we've all been complaining about The Fifth Element and other initial transfers, or wanting killer BDs. So I'd look forward to this if it's were really true. (btw, I have all 3 titles already, so it's not that I don't feel your pain )

It is a pity that there are no specs out for these Canadian titles. The artwork is by far better IMO. I don't have T2 yet and if there is really HD audio on this disc I would go for the Canadian release even though for me it is more expensive to import from Canada due to the generally cheaper pricing and the 10% discount amazon.com is offering.

Interesting. Notice T2 has a rank of #155 on Amazon.ca?

The new Stargate is shown as the Ultimate Edition while the original is is only labelled Extended Cut. And Total Recall is a Special Edition.

So, expect a T2 Ultimate Edition triple dip at some point.

One thing is for sure, the pricing is pretty sweet. CDN$20.97 is about US$18.

"T2" and "Stargate" are both showing as 6-13 days until they're back in stock at Amazon US, although "Total Recall" is in stock. Hmmm.

I think when I posted this yesterday the sales rank was around the 80's, but why would I mention it? The other people would say "Oh for Pete's sake, it's only in Canada!", eh?

The cover name differences and the T2 HD AUDIO are the only indications that anything could be different. We'll find out in about 2 weeks.

The current Stargate disc has an audio commentary, that hardly could be called an Ultimate Edition...

The current Total Recall doesn't come with a commentary. Has a 'Visions of Mars' featurette instead. Would that make it a Special Edition?

Maybe the covers are more than 6 months old, from before the current releases, but these seem to be new listings just out, I don't remember seeing the T2 cover 10 days ago when I scouted the Futureshop site for the Beerfest and Wickerman covers. Don't think I'd would have missed that.

I can explain about the Total Recall Special Edition.

A few years ago, Lionsgate released their special editions in those limited collector cases - Basic Instinct came in the clear plastic case with the icepick pen, and Total Recall came in a round tin with a "sponge" that kept the disc from being scratched. These titles were both remastered in HD at that time.

So all they did for the Blu-ray release was take a print from that "Special Edition" HD master. So that is why its called the Special Edition - that they used the SE master instead of the previous master - not because of any extras.

That's bad. I have both Icepick and round Mars tin Special Limited Edition DVDs, and the Total Recall extras were:

1- Commentary track with Arnold and Paul Verhoeven
2- "Imagining Total Recall" documentary
3- Rekall's virtual vacations
4- "Visions of Mars" featurette
5- Visual storyboards comparisons
6- Conceptual art
7- Photo gallery
8- Production notes
9- Theatrical trailers and TV spots
10- Cast and crew info

and it had Français subs too.

They should call this the Severely Limited Edition then!

Deci, you should probably change the title of this theard until they are released. I beleive that more likely than not they are the same release, and I hate to see all this doom and gloom spread.

It's not really double dipping when the market is as small as it is on either format. If they're doing their releases again from launch with better understanding of the format and codecs as well as space, in the long run it's better to let those relatively small production runs from the summer peter out and let these take over. Providing they actually are new encodes.

So, is T2 extended edition or not? I got all 3 movies already and, well if those are better releases I'll get them again but it's kindda strange releasing in 2 month...

Zvi, we just don't know. The covers seem to indicate otherwise but they are covers. On Canada sites. For Terminator 2 it has been about 6 months or so, since the initial release, etc. Maybe the initial pressing is running out. Maybe if the French disc, as required by law to have French language, are a new pressing, they will have the English track in DTS HD (plus the Français), and everything else the same (T2 was the only one that didn't have DTS HD). 13 days for the 9th, 6 for the 2nd of January. Soon we'll know what's really up wth the covers.

Thanks man. I figure 2 releases better than none, but at this point I'd rather have more titles than rereleases
