Default PS3 Dev Kit

may seem like an unusual question but where you can get a PS3 dev kit?

Unless if your a game studio/developer and are having your game be published onto the PS3, you can't. They are off limits to the public.

Ah. I remain by my statement: You can't. Besides. The people who have them that aren't developers aren't likely to sell them via ebay considering how much trouble the would have gone through to get one of the dev kits.

Well Ive been learning how to develop for PCs a friend of mine works on developing with the PS3 for rockstar and my uncle can develope. And between us we thought we might as well get one and make the perfect game. (Well probably not but worth a shot)

I know Nintendo has a stie where you can submit an application for one. They are pretty picky on who they let have one though, but I've heard Sony isn't quite as picky.

I imagine there is a similar site somewhere for the PS3 dev kit, but they are pretty expensive. It probably lists their requirements for them on the site too.

Why doesn't your friend get one from rockstar or see if they have connections to get one?

Ya, I was gonna comment about that... you beat me to it. Most dev kits cost $$$. Microsoft and Apple kits sometimes come for free, to encourage independent development, cuz any J6P can pick up a book on programming and write software. But it's a bit different developing for a console than it is for a PC. In PC's, you're dealing with established languages that have been around for 20+ years, and you get all sorts of API's and libraries of code to help automate redundant functions. But on consoles, you practically have to re-learn the process each generation, and the optimization is much more detail-intensive.

Also, console dev kits also contain proprietary tech that usually requires an NDA (non-disclosure agreement), whereas your PC dev kits are vanilla.

When making a big game, that has teams of people working on it, do they have more than one dev kit? Or are they only used to compile the code the programmers write on their own computers?

I saw somewhere else where an Xbox fan boy was trying to say that the reason EA games ran smoother on Xbox was because Sony only allowed all of EA to have two DevKits, but he was quickly shot down by someone who worked there that said they had 50 in testing alone. (now that i think of it I think it was in link i posted earlier) I don't know the accuracy of that info, but from that it sounds like everyone who touches the game itself along the way has to do so on one of the Dev Kits. I would think you could write program on any computer and then just compile and run code on DEV KIT. Maybe Testing is the only place that even needs Dev Kits and everything up to that point is done on a normal computer. I am curious now myself.

Not sure, but Everyday Shooter (PSN Game) was made on a computer and then adapted to work on the PS3 with the Dev Kit.

I want to buy both a PSP and PS3 dev kit. I have been developing a cross-platform (between portable and PC) game for just over a year and it is finally approaching beta. It runs on PC and Windows Mobile at the moment but I want it to be PSP/PS3.

Ask Sony.

http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/19/s...-cost-by-half/

I really wouldn't suggest aiming for it for a 'hobby' though.

If you're looking for hobby-grade, I suggest waiting for Phyre.

It is a Final Fantasy Tactics-ish battle system where stories are kept in individual files. You can play solo or multiplayer. Ideally there will be downloadable quests and whatnot that you can use existing characters in. And since you can make your own, I can see it appealing to like the D&D crowd since they can run their own campaigns
Right now, on Mobile you can track/see all the character information. The actual game is played on a PC. In the future, I want it to be playable by PSP or PS3, or have the PS3 'host' the game and like...show high-resolution versions of the fights going on. Still unsure how much power/crossover play I can do.
So yeah, it is just me & 2 friends coding, and around 5 artists/graphic designers doing sprites, maps, character art, etc. I say 'around' since not all of them are consistently contributing. Something about 'jobs' or 'marriage' keeping them busy.

$10k is still way steep. You mean the Flow people paid $10k to make a game that looks like it took about 30 minutes and a pound of weed to finish? Dang...

fl0w was made with PhyreEngine, we don't know the price on that for when they were working on it. But Phyre is more a software SDK for the PC to develop for the PS3 [and the PSP I believe].

I suggest waiting for PhyreEngine to get publicly released to be honest for the hobbists .
