Which games/viewpoints do you prefer to play? 1st person, 3rd person or both? I personally prefer to play 1st person games. For some reason it makes me feel as if I am really the character vs. someone controlling the character. I also do not like having the ability to “Move the Camera” and see things that only a genii could see. This includes Racing games, I usually play with the cockpit view or full windshield view vs. the above car view.
When I saw trailers for MGS4 I thought to myself WOW what a great looking game and not much else. But then I got to see a 15 min walkthrough with commentary from one of the Game Directors. He explained how you could play the entire game in 1st person. And now I am sold and will hope I get lucky on June 12th. Don’t get me wrong, 1st person has its cons, peripherals are very limited. And its hard to peak around corners. But having the option to play both is great. |

I usually like it if both are implemented..
I like the idea of seeing my character but sometimes first person gives you that extra immersion. So both at the same time, like the old conflicts use to do. |

I'm the opposite. Which I think is why I love Far Cry 2 where everything is in first person. It helps make you feel that your the character, not just playing as them.

3rd person all the way.
I do think that a good game should give the option though. |

I usually prefer 3rd person because I feel more immersed when I can actually see my character and what he looks like. It helps me identify with the toon more.
I do agree that games like Oblivion, RB6V2 (yes, there is a 'cheat code' you can enter to make everything 3rd person!), GRAW, etc., that allow you too choose first person or third person is the best scenario all around. I really liked Oblivion on my PC when I could use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out of 1st person (it's easier for fighting but just running around 3rd person was more exciting for me). Edit: Wanted to add that although you may feel like you 'see more' in third person, it's not a whole lot more. In fact, 3rd person is probably closer to how you would actually perceive the world in real-life. I know this sounds odd at first; however, in first person you have basically no peripheral vision (and yes, you can see down halls and 'around corners' in real life pretty easily by only getting a portion of your eye past it thanks to peripherals). I can't tell you how many times I've had someone literally standing right next to me in 1st person and not even known it. In real life, that simply would not ever happen (even if I didn't hear them). I would see them coming long before they were even next to me. Last edited by Proteus; 03-25-2008 at 05:23 PM. |
