Default If I only watch the movies, is the update for the ps3 necessary?

I only watch the movies, so I was wondering whether updating my ps3 was necessary? I had no trouble playing any of my movies so far, is there a point in mending what isn't broke?

There are a few other things like the resume option that's already been stated, but you'll probably want to keep updating anyways because they keep your player current.

I'm afraid that if I download it I'll get problems I never had before. I read a post in this forum about a dude who says that AFTER he downloaded the new firmware update his Lost BD has been freezing?!?

Yeah...i mean if your happy...like they say if its not broke dont fix it...i think thats how it goes....But its not a necessary download...Only if you want the online options the newer blu rays will have...and the resume option
I dont think it will mess your ps3 up...But i would hate to be the one that said do it and then it messes you up ya know...So with that said..DO YOU!!!

You don't have to update it, you'll just be missing out on the profile 1.1 and 2.0 features.

personally the restart function is reason enough to download it...I personally
could care less about the bd-live function, but it's nice to be able to stop
a movie for a minute if you need to and not have to que it up again

Of course that feature only works on certain titles, I tried POTC trilogy, and if you stop the film, you have to start all over again. I hope they fix this in a future update.

POTC like other high profile Disney BDs use BD-J, which has to enable its own resume function. Since the POTC discs didn't have this function, the resume feature on the PS3 or any other BD player won't work with them. It's not a PS3/player problem.

As for bricking your PS3, if it's under warranty, SCEA/E/J will send you a replacement.
