Default Bang for buck Dayton HSU line vs. Boston XB6 others

Right now I'm looking at research on subwoofers.
I'm looking to spend under $300 for a sub because I'd like to spend a larger portion on the newest Onkyo 805 and that already surpasses my budget by several hundred dollars. I plan on buying a new sub, Onkyo receiver and boston acoustics CR57 as rears to complete my line of Audio. The budget is $1200 for all 3 of those. I'm willing to stretch my budget to the Dayton 12" if the 10" is inadequate for my room size or if someone knows where I can get the Onkyo for $600
My budget has already been stretched by double, and I might can it all if I can't make ends meet here with living expenses.

Cr57 pair: $108
Sub: $300
Onkyo 805: $700

My bedroom is 16 feet Long, 12 feet Wide, 10 feet high (give or take half a foot on any measurement) So about 1920-2000 Cubic Feet.

I'll be using it for music movies, and games in an even ratio.
So the sub is required to be punchy and detailed but also having a decent amount of power for my room size. It has to be an upgraded of my current sub. My current sub has long lived its day and need to be upgraded.

Sub is still Klipsch PC Promedia Ultra. (dual 8" 200 Watt)
My fronts owned are Boston Acoustics CR67
Rears will be upgraded to Boston Acoustics CR57 (currently klipsch pc speakers)
Center owned is Infinity Beta C250 (because I didn't like the "matching" CR Center that Boston had with small drivers and passive radiator/fake speaker)

I intend on transferring the Klipsch Promedia Ultra setup downstairs for my Mom's TV, although it will be underpowered for the living room.

I have different speakers because I once started out from PC speakers as a poor teenager and now I'm an adult earning my own money.
However many people agree on the forums I have friends with that the Klipsch promedias and Infinity line have good timbre with the Bostons.
Its just the promedia sounds pretty harsh and compressed to my other speakers.

Subs:

Dayton HSU 10" $292
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=300-392
Dayton HSU 12" $389
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=300-394
Boston XB6 $249
http://www.amazon.com/Boston-Acousti.../dp/B000JNS3JI

OH thanks for looking

couple other options at a reasonable price for the sub....... both capable of getting very deep for HT, and are both very musical as well.....

The Velodyne was $399 I think it got free shipping too right?????

yeah, the ML is $599

I see someone on Amazon has a Velodyne DPS-12 for $349 (plus $40 shipping) used, which is a steal, but it's a new seller, so I'd stay away from that.

I know it's your money and you can buy whatever you like, but speakers hold their value fairly well, and receiver prices drop like crazy because better ones are made all the time..... I think you're putting a lot of your budget into the Receiver in an attempt to "future proof" yourself, but I think speakers are far more important, although the Onkyo 805 is supposed to be a nice receiver (I've never auditioned one so I can't say)

I'd snag up one of these great deals on the Onkyo 605 or 705 if you like the Onkyo, and free up more room for the sub/speakers. (the surrounds you have picked out I'm sure are fine.... as surrounds are hardly the 'cornerstone' of the HT system)

Hmm so far I have heard better things on HSU than Velodyne dollar per dollar.
But I like that free shipping part.

I definitely won't be buying any plastic speaker lol.
But at the same time, I won't get a $600 sub if it will be overkill compared to the rest of my system. Needs to sound balanced.

I'm using the "trickle down" system of upgrading speakers and I need to complete this midrange setup , and then build a completely new HIGH END SETUP.

Set A, budget for Mom: Klipsch Promedia PC speakers + VSX 815
Set B, Mid premium setup: Boston Rears and Fronts, Infinity Center, undecided mid range power sub. Onkyo 805
SET C: Near future, will start over again with all high end components $5000 budget

I need to spend more on a receiver so that way I don't get any HISS on the headphone amp, so the weaker models have cheaper headphone output.
I need noiseless PHONES output. I already have a PIONEER VSX815
there is no need for another budget Amplifier.

Stick with HSU subs. Dr HSU also designed subs for Outlaw Audio. I owned the Outlaw LFM-1 and sold it here incredible. I just ordered the HSU VTF-2 MK3 to replace my SVS PB0nsd. The HSU's are great for movies but trump the SVS for music, in my opinion. The only downside to the Dayton HSU sub is waiting until June. Check below for deals.

So, in your opinion, the HSU is better than the SVS for balanced movie/music use?

I too am in the market for a new sub. The SVS sub interestes me due to response down to 20Hz. I am also in the same boat as the OP, in that my budget is sorely lacking.

Right now, I am using a Polk Audio PSW404 (10", 200w) and it is doing an alright job for now, but I just upgraded my L/C/R/S to Axiom, and they sound so damn good that now I want a "real" sub to round out my sound once and for all.

Also, to the OP, what specs are you looking at on the Onkyo 805 that leads you to believe that the phone jack's output stage is so much better than the 605 or 705? I have no clue of the spec, is why I ask.

Mainly just user experience from Head Fi advisors. Every time a certain group of guys on there ( I chose one group for best advice) it has been consistent every time. The 805 has 0.05 % distortion vs the 705 of .08% distortion. I think that alone is enough for me to want to spend the additional dollar. I can only verify the difference on Headphones due to my experience that receivers at a certain price range and up have better quality receivers, so its just a gamble in that regard but there are other things I feel the 805 is great and for $700 online where the 705 is $650.

Everyone thanks for your contributions thus far . There is continously good news on Dayton and HSU, and theres hardly any reviews ever for Boston Acoustics period.
I took a gamble with the CR67, but a few colleagues of mine have set them up side by side
vs Paradigm and CR67s are up to the task vs. up to a $900 pair speaker. Look up
"Swerv Cr67".

Yes. Don't get me wrong. My SVS is great. I just find it too tight/muscular for music. I would have kept both if I could afford it, SVS for HT and HSU for music.

Odd you say that..... mostly subs aren't tight enough for music if they're more adept for HT..... and tight musical subs don't perform well with extreme lows of HT...... Although many subs excel at both, as a lot of classical music and Jazz are usually FULL of good deep bass.

Too much focus on the extreme lows which probably represents 3-5% of total use, if that much. I don't listen to Classical or Jazz either. For me subs aren't supposed to overpower your other speakers and that is easy to do when the standard crossover point is 80. I find HSU to be the best at giving the lows when needed, but also allow me to enjoy my music collection.

CR67 is only $134.00 at Amazon.com thats just $25 more
for a larger speaker. I think I should get another pair of CR67s than the smaller 4.5" woofer CR57 for surrounds, what do you think ?

About Rear frequencies, in what range of sounds show up?
I heard somewhere that rear DTS encodes don't have sounds above 80hz, is this true? Will I benefit from going larger or not? I'm no talking about the crossover in the receiver, but the actual way the audio engineers decided to map the sounds on the actual speakers.
What sounds get generated to the rears? Will I benefit from the larger speaker or not.

The CR57 is nicely sized for convenience but the 67 has more low and and not much more cash at all.

So I thought because June 26th is a long time away, I can increase the budget.

I'll upgrade to the
12" Dayton HSU Sub $389
Keep the

Onkyo 805 Receiver should reduce be around $700 by then
and try to get the

Boston acoustics CR67's (not smaller 57's)
in a week or so before they realise how cheap they are selling them for
$130

I may even buy an additional pair of CR67's and use one speaker for the center and have a very transparent audio system rivaling anything much higher in price.

I got a chance to audition the Definitive series on the weekend $999 a pair, and the center $500 a pair. Honestly I can't say these speakers were better than the BA CR67's . The slight bit of boxiness and sibilance in POTC throughout took away the feeling of the sound transparently arriving from nowhere and made it like the speaker box was in the room.
Sure they had a bit more low bass where my Bostons lack, but otherwise any other 9 check points were dismal compared to the Bostons. With a good sub there it loses out all the way.

My good audiophile buddy Swerv had a chance to own the B&W towers for $1899 a pair and still the Bostons have many points about them that are better and its not a blowout in loss.
