Gridiron Gang got a solid 4 star in picture quality from Bracke at High Def Digest. He now admits that Sony and mpeg 2 have got it going after early doubts on the format.

Another example of how Microsoft FUD had an early affect. The shame is that people that should have investigated the situation chose to listen to MS-FUD and its fanboys.

Anyone who had DTheater knew how great MPEG-2 could look. And we now have variable bit-rates (instead of constant) and 16Mbps of excess peak available. Add to that the fact the MPEG-2 encoders have improved significantly since DTheater.

It was simply a PR war against MPEG-2 to drum up public pressure for a early move to VC-1, which really is Microsofts goal in this all along. The coming digital delivery, as well as the Open Cable Application Platform (OCAP) centered around MPEG-2, AVC, and a BD-J variant, means MS needs to establish its tech in the greater video delivery space.

Well I'll have to wait until I get my own copy (and a PS3) but as a movie it's a pretty good one. Hard-ass with lots of love. Great job Johnson and XHIBIT did as well as most of the cast.

And looks like Sony PE is teasing us with more MAJOR releases coming soon.
